Overview

For the soundtrack to his film Moulin Rouge, a tale of star-crossed lovers who meet at the famed turn-of-the-century Paris nightclub, Romeo and Juliet director Baz Luhrmann has erased musical boundaries. David Bowie opens and closes the disc with two drastically different versions of the standard "Nature Boy" -- the opening track is accented by a dramatic orchestral arrangement, while the closing version is a trip-hop collaboration with Massive Attack. In between these sonic bookends, stylistic hybrids run delightfully wild as each selection helps tell the film's forbidden affair between main characters Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. Beck, with the help of Timbaland's beat wizardry, delivers a spacey, minimalist take on Bowie's "Diamond Dogs," and a superstar summit between junior divas Christina Aguilera, Mya, Pink, and Lil' Kim results in a paint-peeling cover of Labelle's "Lady Marmalade." Kidman and McGregor also flaunt their surprisingly effective vocal chops on several tracks and combine their talents on the comical "Elephant Love Melody," a call-and-response medley of love songs from such varied artists as the Beatles ("All You Need Is Love"), Whitney Houston ("I Will Always Love You"), U2 ("In the Name of Love"), and Thelma Houston ("Don't Leave Me This Way"). Elsewhere, the endearing McGregor and Jose Feliciano transform the Police classic "Roxanne" into "El Tango de Roxanne," and a vampy Kidman delivers the showstopper "Sparkling Diamonds," complete with Vegas-flavored brass arrangements, street-credible beats, and lyrics borrowed from Marilyn Monroe's "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" and Madonna's "Material Girl." With Moulin Rouge, Baz Luhrmann -- who had a pop hit back in '99 with the spoken-word curio "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)" -- shows that besides being a visionary filmmaker, he's got a flair for things musical as well. Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Brad Kohlenstein
At the very least, director Baz Luhrmann has created something different here. His modern-day musical weaves new cover versions of songs from the past three decades into one story about a brothel in turn of the century Paris. Its an odd combination to begin with, and the soundtrack itself bounces back and forth between very hip, modern tracks from artists at the top of their game and big Broadway-style ballads from the cast of the film. Some of the most well-respected names in music signed on for the project, including Beck, Bono, Timbaland, and David Bowie. Fatboy Slim created a "Can Can" for the next generation with "Because We Can," and Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Pink, and Mya teamed up for a surefire hit with their naughtier version of Patti Labelle's "Lady Marmalade." In stark contrast to these edgy tracks, the album spends the rest of its time on love songs from Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. They perform big-voiced, orchestra-backed versions of sentimental favorites like Elton John's "Your Song." The "Elephant Love Medley" strings together some of pop's sappiest hits, including "Up Where We Belong," "One More Night," and "I Will Always Love You." Perhaps to many people's surprise, Kidman and McGregor can really sing, and maybe in a different environment it would be easier to take these songs seriously, but standing here outside the context of the film and next to Beck covering David Bowie, they seem more comic than creative.

Moulin Rouge is a great movie, but the CD makes it even greater. In my opinion, the music is what makes up the movie! ''Lady Marmalade'' has been heard in places from the mall to the radio to your school dance. Everywhere you go you can hear this hit song. This song is topping the charts like crazy, thanks to all Christina Aquilera, Mya, and Pink fans! If you want the ''Lady Marmalade'' single, go under 'Artist' and type in 'Christina Aquilera'. Scroll down and right before the imported CDs there it is. Cya!

I'm 100% positive it will win some awards. You have to see the movie. Although, i think the music makes the movie.

I really loved the movie, and was anxiously awaiting listening to the soundtrack after I bought it. I got it home, tossed it in the CD player, and had to listen to remakes and new material (which by the way, didn't come close to comparison with the music in the movie). I'm almost inclined to go back and ask for a refund.

The soundtrack is truely amazing! The song ''Come what may'' sung by Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor will leave you in tears! This soundtrack is great for the family, because it has Ewan McGregor, Nicole Kidman, Fat boy slim, Beck, Lil Kim, Christina, Mya, Pink, and a lot more!

The composers did a wonderful job of doing something that hasn't emerged from the undergound until recently... the mix. That's right, it's kind of like creative cheating. ''El Tango De Roxanne'' is the best example, taking the pop tune ''Roxanne'', adding a tango/techno background, then throwing in a little Broadway to top it all off. Amazing soundtrack to go with an amazing movie.

This is a great cd! It is my absolute favorite! I have no idea why that girl says the music doesn't match the movie. It does too! The disappointed girl has no taste and is a dyke. get this cd! EWAN MCGREGOR IS HOT!

Moulin Rouge is an exciting, sad, love story. It was twisted but I recomend going to see it!

This is a reasonably good cut from the film music. IT IS NOT, nor does it resemble by the subtlest reflection, any of the music of the era nor of the club I remember. Truth can be a ''B'' when it doesn't match your fantasy. Sorry kids.

After seeing the movie on DVD, I had to have the soundtrack the next day. I wish every minute of music in the movie had been on the disc, but its a very solid disc none the less. Anyone hearing this album for the first time will be pleasantly surprised at how good McGreggor and Kidman are singing the material. The beautiful singing is complimented by the sumptious production and orchestration. It makes for lovely and dramatic listening. One album it reminds me of strongly is the ODE version of TOMMY, with the London Philharmonic. They both employ similar orchestration which can be very dramatic and stirring - particularly in the car. I made the mistake of not seeing this movie in the theater when it came out because I thought the idea of a modern musical was silly. I was just wrong.

This is a great movie but the soundtrack doesn't have everything. It doesn't have ''Like A Virgin'', ''The Sound of Music'', or the ''Freedom, Beauty, Truth, and Love Theme''. Or the ''So delighting it will run for 50 years'' thing. So it's better to buy the movie to get all the music, but this soundtrack is great, with the power hit ''Lady Marmalade'' performed by pop-stars Christina Aguilera and Mya and rap/r&b-stars Pink and Lil' Kim. Missy Elliot adds the icing to the cake. Some of the favorites from the movie are ''Sparkling Diamonds'', a beautiful medley of ''Diamond's Are A Girls Best Friend'' and ''Material Girl'' performed by Nicole Kidman, and ''Hindi Sad Diamonds'' with ''Chamma Chamma'' and a reprise of ''Diamond's Are A Girls Best Friend''. ''Elephant Love Medley'' displays the wonderful voice talents of Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman, along with beautiful love songs like Dolly Parton's ''I Will Always Love You'' and Elton John's ''Your Song'' (which also appears as a solo by Ewan McGreogor on the album). This CD is a must have for your collection.

I didn't like the movie one bit, except for the awesome music that was played throughout. The movie was a washout, the soundtrack is a winner!
