Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Spectacular photographs and simple text make this an ideal choice for beginning readers to use independently. Younger learners will be attracted not only by the topic, but by the full-page color pictures, beginning with a youngster playing King of the Mountain, arm raised in victory. How appropriate, then, that the final photo depicts people on top of the world's tallest mountain, not with arms raised, but with flags flying in triumph. At times the text can be questionable, for example, "A mountain is a very high piece of land." While this is true, the same definition can be made for a mesa. Fortunately, the text faces a photograph illustrating this fact. Not only is Mount Everest featured, we are introduced to a group of people, the Sherpas, who live nearby. Many work as guides helping climbers reach the peak of Mount Everest. The book doesn't name the animal pictured, one of the few animals living on Mount Everest. This might encourage guessing or a discussion about this animal's survival. The book is diplomatic in its portrayal of mountain climbers, stating they come from all over the world, and women and men are both represented equally. Perhaps most moving is the photograph of Sir Edmund Hillary and his guide, Tenzing Norgaythe first people documented to reach the top. The glossary is unusual, though geared toward early readers. Instead of descriptive sentences, words are illustrated by photographs from the body of the work where they were first introduced. I was pleasantly surprised with this "Rookie Read-About Geography" title. It will hold the interest of many, as well as provide a source of accomplishment for those who are self-starters. Just think, it may also encourage all ofus to reach the top of whatever lies before us, no matter how high the mountain, or how difficult it appears! 2002, Children's Press/Scholastic,
