Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The faces of four outstanding presidents have been carved into a mountain called Mount Rushmore. It is located in South Dakota which is an area that is a bit remote for most Americans. The idea was conceived by Gutzon Borglum and executed over a period of fourteen years by him and his son along with many workmen. This pre-reader, which is part of the "American Symbol" series, provides excellent pictures but only one sentence per spread. It identifies the presidents (Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt), but does not offer much detail about the reason for their selection, the monument itself, or the difficulty that the planners faced raising money as well as the problems encountered during its construction. Having made the trip myself, it is interesting to learn that nearly 3,000,000 visitors come annually. This short text should whet the appetites of young readers to visit the monument. On the first page of this very interesting book is a feature called words to know (pictures and text) and a table of contents. The closing page includes the references about the topic, suggested websites, plus an index. This book is leveled as guided reading B with a word count of seventy-three. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
