Library Journal
Today, seven of every ten bicycles sold in the United States are mountain bikes. It's no wonder then that the bicycling literature is shifting focus to this machine. Van der Plas, a prolific bicycling author with no fewer than nine other titles currently in print (e.g., The Bicycle Touring Manual , LJ 10/1/87; The Bicycle Repair Book , Bicycle Bks., 1989), capitalizes on this trend here. All aspects of mountain biking are covered, albeit briefly, in these 128 pages: bike frames, components, maintenance, clothing, accessories, touring, etc. The most important and useful chapters are ``Basic Riding Skills'' and ``Advanced Off-Road Techniques.'' This beautifully illustrated treatment (color photos on practically every page) is recommended as a solid introduction for libraries lacking in this area.-- Thomas K. Fry, UCLA Libs.
