Mountain High Valley Low (Yolanda Adams)

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Paula T. Renfroe
With a voice mighty enough to make the walls of Jericho come tumbling down, contemporary gospel songstress Yolanda Adams makes an equally as powerful debut on Elektra Records with Mountain High Valley Low. Although she is literally the first lady of gospel on Elektra, three of her previous recordings, Yolanda Live in Washington, More than a Melody, and Save the World, garnered her Grammy nominations in the Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album category. Adams is no stranger in the gospel arena, but she is bound to capture an even broader audience with Mountain High Valley Low. The hip-hop tinged "Time to Change" which includes DJ scratches, the guitar-laced "Yeah," the danceable "Wherever You Are," and the soulful "He'll Arrive Coming Back," featuring Kelly Price, unite positive messages with beats to groove to. No need to throw the church fan at Adams, though--she hasn't abandoned her traditional roots. The inspirational "That Name" and the electrifying, "In the Midst of It All" showcase not only her ability to sing with clarity and diction, but also her gift for stirring the soul. That's a blessing, indeed.
All Music Guide - Stacia Proefrock
Yolanda Adams is too beautiful and talented to have escaped the bickerings of some narrow-minded people within the gospel community. She has been criticized in the past both for her manner of dress more glamorous than seductive and for her "secular" music which focuses on faith-driven lyrics while branching out into R&B and pop styles. With the release of Mountain High. . .Valley Low, her first album on a major, mainstream record label, it would seem that she has provided her attackers with their most potent ammunition ever. The album has been heavily promoted by Elektra Records, and has world-class producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, and Keith Thomas stretching Adams' musical boundaries further than ever. While at times they take her in strange directions the hip-hop flavor on "Time to Change" sounds like a lost track from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, each song, taken independently, works. The album is incredibly varied and makes use of a full grab-bag of effects, from heavy over-dubbing on some tracks Adams is singing up to three layers of vocals at the same time, while backup vocalists add even more textures to swelling pop-orchestra string lines to funky electronic effects. The bottom line, though, for critics and fans alike, is the message. Before they crank up their pitching arms the stone throwers should take note: this is an incredibly inspirational album in which every song focuses on spreading the message of Jesus. Adams just gets to have a lot of fun along the way. In a time when most gospel albums don't make a dent in music sales outside of the Christian community, an artist with Adams' kind of appeal is a blessing, not a curse.

    Very Nice!!!

This CD didn't do much for me; however, tracks #4 (written by gospel artist Richard Smallwood), 5 and 7 are so great that they uplifted the entire CD. Yolanda Adams has a tremendous voice but her best music seems to be traditional gospel, which is what I hope she sticks with.~~Damon Mitchell

    SPIRITUALLY AWESOME!

I THINK THE CD IS WONDERFUL. IT'S GOOD FOR THE YOUNG AND THE OLD LISTENERS. IT HAS KIND OF A HIP-HOP FLOW TO IT BUT AT THE SAME TIME IT IS BASED ON THE LORD. YOLANDA ADAMS DID VERY WELL ON THIS PROJECT.

    Annointed!

I'll admit when I first heard the album, I wasn't too impressed. Then I heard her song on the radio (Open Heart) and had to know who that was. Once I realized it was Yolanda, I listened to her album again. Now she is one of my favorites. Yolanda is indeed an annointed soloist.

    Heaven Sent

Yolanda Adams is so blessed of God that it is truly difficult to describe with words. ''Open my Heart'' has touched my soul in a way that no song has in a long time. I pray God continues to bless her ministry.

    What a powerful voice!

Yolanda Adams has a powerful and strong voice. Her voice is a true blessful gift from God. I enjoy her album: Mountain High, Valley Low. It makes me dance, sing, and honor God and Jesus. My favorite three songs are: ''Time to Change, Fragile Heart, and He'll Arrive(Coming Back) with Kelly Price( she also can sing very well). I recommend this album to Christians and non-Christians. It will lift your spirits and help you draw closer to the true Saviour of our souls, Jesus Christ. Yolanda is the best. I love to hear her sing as much as I love to hear CeCe Winans.

As always, she shines again with the music of god

There as usual the music of yolanda adams that will send you into that point that makes you come in contact with god no matter if you want to or not. When you think she cannot out do the last album, she comes back with a fire that only god can give her. Keep putting out this type of music and you will always have a fan. This is an excellent album I think everyone should buy it it brings you a little bit closer to god when you listen to it well done Yolanda

    Annointing and Musical Appeal

Yolanda has done it again! This album is even better than her earlier albums. Though the songs have a jazzy or hip hop sound, she has not sacrificed content. There are songs to play and dance to when on a MOUNTAIN HIGH, but there are also songs that will bring you to tears when at a VALLEY LOW. My favorite songs are number 3 and number 7.
