Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
In Mountains of Jokes about Rocks, Minerals, and Soil author Melissa Stewart offers elementary aged readers a quick and joke filled look at some basic science linked to the field of geology. Combining a snippet of information about a key geologic principle with a well-intended but sometimes groan eliciting joke, Stewart creates a fun and fact-filled science text. Readers are provided introductory information about subjects such as soil formation, mountain growth, types of rocks, the layers of the Earth, and a number of other elements of geology. In each instance the science topic at hand is paired with at least two puns or other types of jokes that perhaps only a child could fully appreciate. This combination works as does the epilogue that details how to create and tell jokes. In addition, illustrator Gerald Kelley does a nice job of adding whimsy to the book via his artwork. Readers with an interest in science will have a good time with this book. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
