Library Journal - Library Journal
In association with the British Royal Geographic Society and with access to their extensive archives, Cameron has produced a fine sourcebook on the Central Asian mountains. Although emphasis is on explorers and climbers, this is not exclusively a mountaineering book. Early chapters deal with geology, history, and inhabitants of this vast region. Cameron traces British exploration, which began about the end of the 18th century triggered by the East India Company, and follows climbers from late 19th century to the present. Quotes from the writings of these hardy visitors make up a considerable part of later chapters, and one can dip into the book almost anywhere and become immersed in their vicissitudes and triumphs.
