Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In this phonic reader, the focus is not on the story, but the way words change when new vowels are introduced. The changes are humorous and make one assume they will help retention. To illustratepig is in his pen, but when the "e" becomes an "a," the pig is in a pan. Each spread offers examples of simple words that are easily changed (nut/net; lap/lip; leg/log; hat/hut; fin/fan; bud/bed; sax/six; cub/cob; rig/rug; and mop/map). Mouse does it all by changing letters, and on the last page challenges kids to do some magic of their own. A "Step into Reading" series book. 2002, Random House,

K-Gr 1-On 11 spreads, a mouse magician changes a middle vowel, thus creating a new word. Some of the pairs, such as "leg" and "log," will be familiar to beginning readers. Others, such as "rig" and "rug," will be less so. However, the color cartoon illustrations, featuring a mix of animals and people of varying ethnicity, show clearly what a "sax" is, even if the musical instrument is unfamiliar to children. A cheery introduction to vowels.-Lisa Smith, Lindenhurst Memorial Library, NY Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.

I am a Reading Specialist and I often work with second and third graders who are learning to 'figure out' new words slowly. In Mouse Makes Magic, Mouse changes the vowels in one syllable words, and. . .presto! A new word! My second and third graders often reread this easy little book as a warm-up before going on to books with more difficult phonics practice.
