Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Koenig, a freelance writer and editor, became friendly with many part-time employees of Disneyland in Anaheim. When they joined a major strike in 1984, Koenig was inspired to write this book. Drawing on interviews and extensive research, Koenig describes in detail Walt Disney's plan and the goals for his amusement park; the behind-the-scenes mechanisms of the attractions; the selection, training, and expectations of the employees; the persona of the Disney characters; profiles of guests (both welcome and unwelcome); the tragic accidents that have occurred and the lawsuits that ensued; and the spinoffs throughout the world. Though the lurid details of park mishaps and employee dissatisfaction are of interest to some, there's more here than most visitors would want to know. Even the author comes across as an admirer rather than as someone blowing the cover on the magic of Disney. Most libraries will want to stick with Birnbaum's Disneyland (Hyperion, 1992).-Elizabeth Loftus, Onondaga Cty. P.L., Syracuse, N.Y.

    more from this reviewer

    Offically my favorite book!

I LOVE Disneyland and anything that haas to do with Disney! This is the perfect book for Disney lovers! It has a boat load of fun stories about what the cast member do when they are bored, what goes on behind the scenes, why people think they can sue Disney, and so much more!

If anyone in your family has an obsession with Disney this is the book to get. I'm really excited to read the next one and the one about Disney World and Disney Animation!

The Happiest Place on Earth . . Are You Sure??

If you want to keep on believing that Disneyland is the 'Best Place In the World,' then you may want to think about whether or not you want to read this book. This book was great!! This book took an un-edited, behind the scenes look at Disneyland. The author tells the history of the park from its founding by Disney and details about how things have changed since his death. Personal interviews with Disney insders and employees paint a different picture from what we see on television. Keonig has done something that many people are afraid to do . .tell it how it is! There is no sugar coating the truth here.

Fasinating book, even for a cast member

I am a Disney cast member and I thought that this book was brilliant. David Koenig did an excellent job of spilling all the juicy details that Disneyland doesn't want you to know. I read it in a weekend, I couldn't put the book down. I learned things that even a cast member, such as my self, didn't know. I am anxious to read his second book on the resort.

Great source of `behind the scenes┬┐ information

This book gives the reader information about what it must be like to work at the Disneyland Park. It gives information about the building of the park, the people who work there and some of the things that Disney Company does to try to maintain the feeling of magic for its customers. I enjoyed reading about the many things that happen every day and night at Disneyland that help to make the customer experience better. One example is the army of workers that come out at night to make sure that everything is clean and safe for the next day¿s customers. I think that it would be fascinating to watch what happens at night at Disneyland or Walt Disney World but I doubt that I will ever have that opportunity. This book shows that Disneyland is like all other parks in that there are the unglamorous and even dangerous areas. I think that the author might have gone into more detail on some of the more gruesome accidental deaths than I would have liked. However, I appreciated that the author presented this information in a factual way and did not betray the reader¿s trust by getting on a soapbox to preach and draw unsubstantiated conclusions based on these isolated incidents as other authors have. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in how Disney runs their parks and makes those parks so popular. This book is an easy and quick read and gives the reader a lot of information is a fairly short amount of time.

    Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the coolest book I have ever read. It rocks with stories of intrigue, lust, and sheer madness. The best chapter is about all of the pranks that the Cast Members play on each other and the guests! BUY THIS BOOK!

Koenig's insightful and respectful Disneyland book rings the bell.

This is a must have for anyone who has ever been just a little curious about peeking behind the scenes at Disneyland. Written from the perspective of someone who still is captivated by the magic long after the passing of Walt Disney turned Disneyland into a 'entertainment for profit company'. I enjoyed the behind the scenes tales that are well documented and triple checked for accuracy. This book will give you a unique bird's eye view into how the park came to be and how problems even tragedies within the park were handled. Not to worry this book will not ruin your visit to the Magic Kingdom but be prepared for the truth. This book will make you mad and even move you to tears when the park honors Walt's passing. It is so nice to read a book about Disneyland not put out by someone who was afraid to dream so feels they must tear other dreams down.A person who still recognizes that Walt's Dream will be alive as long as families can come together and enjoy Disneyland together. A must have for any Disney fan! Great Job Mr.Koenig!
