Overview

Mouse and Minka invite YOU to celebrate summer with a picnic in the park.

Roll down the hill on tickly green grass.

Fly kites fluttery high in the sky.

And don't forget juicy watermelon!

But before it's time to go home, a summer surprise sparkles in the sky.

CRACKLE, POP, BOOM!

What's making that sound?

Mouse tries many new things when he and his father go out and play in the snow.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In Mouse's latest adventure, Mouse's First Summer by Lauren Thompson, illus. by Buket Erdogan, the diminutive hero and pal Minka explore all aspects of a summer picnic, from red watermelon under the blue sky to the white, brown and purple of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The colorful day ends with a bright fireworks show at night. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
In this picture book, Mouse and Minka stow away in a basket and are taken to on a summer picnic. Never having been to a picnic, everything is new and exciting. Mouse and Minka discover ants, watermelons, kites, and lemonade. These two curious mice celebrate the sights and sounds of summer. The young readers will have a great time making connections to Mouse's first summer. The colorful pictures will also draw young readers in and also help to develop visual reading skills. This book is educational, too. With each new summer discover, the mice learn a new color. In the text, all color words are written in that color. This helps to create meaning. Early education teachers will find this book an asset in the classroom. It can be used to discuss describing words and how to ask questions. In addition, this book is written with a question-and-answer format; it would be a great model for group story writing in the classroom. 2004, Simon & Schuster, Ages 2 to 6.
—Louise Parsons
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-As in the other books in the series, Thompson and Erdogan again draw readers into the joys of a simple frolic. Done in jewel-toned acrylics, the double-page paintings create a sumptuous backdrop for this sensory-rich adventure as Mouse and Minka go on a picnic and sample watermelon, roll in the grass, fly a kite, spill lemonade, and feast on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The poetic, spare text dabbles in alliteration, describing "Marching, munching, bold, black ants-" and "Tipsy-tumbly, tickly, green grass." A final proclamation-"Hooray for summer!"-tops off this delicious taste of the season for young listeners.-Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
