Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

In this rodent screwball comedy, a boy mouse named Tully and a girl mouse named Frill meet cute while fleeing a rapacious cat. Tully is so smitten that he can think of nothing but proposing, even when the cat is breathing down their necks; Frill stays focused on the here and now, thus ensuring that the couple survive to celebrate their wedding on the final page. Although Chaconas's (Baby's Song) heroine would have benefited from a more forceful personality (she's more June Allyson than Katharine Hepburn), the text is breezy enough to keep the action bouncing along, while the sturdy, recurring narrative motif-proposal, chase, recovery-should tickle readers' sense of anticipation (a refrain tees up every chase: "Frill didn't say no. She didn't say yes. She didn't say maybe"). As always, Masse (The Princess Who Had Almost Everything) employs a spectacular sense of burnished color. The images never quite take off-the cat feels flat, and the protagonists are overly coy-though the painterly, canvas-textured renderings, while dampening the action somewhat, lend an air of vintage storybook romance. Ages 3-8. (June)

Children's Literature
Young mouse Tully is chased under the pantry door by the family cat and meets the love of his life, Frill, who is sampling the flour in its bag. She is a divine mouse in Tully's eyes, especially with the dusting of flour sprinkled on her fur. He climbs up the broom and proposes to her, but before she can say yes, no, or maybe, Tully realizes he does not have a house for them to live in. They go off in search of a house and are chased by the cat into a hole beneath the stove. With a little work, they now have the perfect house. Again Tully asks Frill to marry him, but before she can say yes, no, or maybe, he realizes he has no food for them. He sneaks out of his new home between the legs of the woman of the house who is taking blue berry muffins out of the oven. The cat races toward him and crashes into the woman as Tully skitters to his home. Muffins fly everywhere including under the stove into Tully and Frill's new home. In the following days, Tully shows Frill how much he loves her and they talk about themselves and their futures. Again Tully asks Frill to marry him, but she does not say yes or no or maybe. Instead she points to the diamond ring on the woman's hand and calls it a star. Tully and Frill go off the find a star and are chased by the cat to the roof. The cat falls off and the mice see a sky full of stars. Tully asks Frill again to be his wife and this time she answers yes. The repetition of words makes this cute story special. And the illustrations fit the story nicely. Reviewer: Sarah Maury Swan

K-Gr 2—Tully the mouse is escaping from the house cat when he stumbles into the pantry and finds Frill. He is so smitten that he immediately asks her to marry him. He tries to find a perfect home for them and to prove that he can be a good provider. All the while, the pair must evade the cat and the missus until finally Frill accepts his proposal. The richly hued artwork is rendered with acrylics and gel. The illustrations add warmth and wonderful details, like pickled vegetables in the pantry, an old-fashioned cat clock with eyes that move side to side, and the two characters with heart-shaped pupils at story's end. The poetic language adds to the romance: "The sky was swept with a glitter of stars. They threw off showers of light like billions and billions of fireflies." Love at first sight.—Linda M. Kenton, Pickleweed Public Library, San Rafael, CA
Kirkus Reviews
A lovesick mousie woos his sweetheart in this twist on the proverbial cat-and-mouse game. When the cat chases Tully under the pantry door, he sees Frill in the flour bin and instantly falls in love. He immediately proposes, but before she can reply, the cat chases them under the kitchen stove, which becomes their warm, cozy home. As Tully and Frill dream of their future, Tully repeats his proposal, but Frill never has a chance to reply, with the cat always on their heels. Finally, one starry night, the cat has a small accident and Frill gives Tully her answer. Masse's bright, cheerful acrylic-and-gel illustrations complement the text with close-ups of the smitten Tully in his jaunty troubadour pants and jacket courting a demure Frill in her flouncy skirt on the pantry shelf, under the kitchen stove and on the rooftop beneath the stars. Courtship vignettes alternate with humorous, action-packed chase scenes from a mouse-eye perspective. Mousie love triumphs through adversity in this fetching little romance. (Picture book. 3-8)
