Description: In this book, pediatric movement disorder specialists review the physiology, pathophysiology, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of children with movement disorders. After an overview of pertinent neuroanatomy, the book addresses individual disorders.
Purpose: The authors, all of whom are child neurologists with particular expertise in movement disorders, wished to produce a "high-quality text" because of the lack of such a resource. They have succeeded. As they note, pediatric movement disorders usually represent a small chapter or section in larger adult movement disorder textbooks. The authors' ease and skill in handling these pediatric disorders is evident throughout the book.
Audience: The authors envision that "readers at all levels of experience" would benefit from this book. The generous tables and illustrations are helpful for non-neurologists and, certainly, most healthcare providers would appreciate the chapters on tics. But, as the authors point out, one of the initial, practical tasks in evaluating a movement disorder is describing it. Many non-neurologists still shy away from this aspect of neurology, and I suspect that neurologists and neurology trainees would get the most out of this book.
Features: After a brief, but cogent, review of basal ganglia anatomy and descriptions of involuntary movements, the authors discuss diseases associated with the specific involuntary movements chapter by chapter (e.g., tic disorders, stereotypies, tremors, dystonias, ataxias). They specifically mention cerebral palsy, sleep movements, metabolic disorders with extrapyramidal movements, and psychogenic movement disorders. Most importantly, the book includes access to a web site with multiple, clear, narrated videos of the different movement disorders.
Assessment: This book fills a large gap in the literature on movement disorders for child neurologists. Much of the education of trainees in movement disorders is spotty and not system-based. The authors hone in on the underlying pathophysiology and outline rational treatment plans for these disorders in this well-written book that is appropriate for a trainee, but also educational for an attending.
