Overview

A brand-new sequel to HOTEL FOR DOGS (made into the hit movie!) and NEWS FOR DOGS! Andi and her canine friends are back for their biggest adventure yet -- Hollywood!

When Andi's brother Bruce wants to enter a dog-themed film-making contest, Andi jumps at the opportunity to become a screenwriter. But neither of them expects what happens next -- a producer wants their movie! Can Andi and Bruce's show (and dogs) go Hollywood?

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Andi Walker, age 12, was so sure she had won the Young Author Dog Lovers Contest that, when she got an envelope from the prize committee, she told her big brother, Ben, her first novel was going to be published before she opened the letter. To the horror of both of them, the first place prize went to their nemesis, Jerry Gordon, who kidnapped their dog in the second book in Duncan's trilogy, News for Dogs (Scholastic, 2009). (The first entry, Hotel for Dogs (Scholastic), came out in 1971 and was turned into a 2009 movie starring Emma Roberts). Andi is devastated to have come in second, but her loving family, especially delightful Aunt Alice, a former private investigator, encourage her to work with Ben to turn her novel into a screenplay, shoot the video, and enter it into a video contest. Neighborhood dogs are cast into adorable roles and shooting begins. Of course, Jerry the bully inserts himself into the drama, almost derailing this new venture until the tables turn on him. Duncan's depiction of a close sibling relationship and their devotion to their pets makes for a delightful reading experience. It's a stretch, though, to think many middle school readers will be interested, given the age of the protagonists, but Duncan is a hit with teen readers, so it might work. Reviewer: Beth E. Andersen
Children's Literature
Andi Walker had worked long and hard on her story for the Young Author Dog Lovers Contest. The eleven-year-old writer was inspired by her love for dogs and the struggles her brother's dog, Red Rover, had faced when still owned by the neglectful and abusive Jerry Gordon. But when she hears back from Pet Lovers Press, she's come in second. Even worse, Jerry Gordon has won first prize! Unwilling to let Bobby Strikes Back slip out of notice, Andi's Aunt Alice finds a film contest in which to enter the story. Andi will write the screenplay, and her brother, Bruce, will do the filming and the directing. Once again, Bobby Strikes Back comes out ahead of the pack. This time, though, the top three contestants are flown to Hollywood to film a TV special in which the winner will be announced. Somehow Jerry Gordon still gets in the way of their success, and Andi and Bruce must find a way to solve the problems he causes. The story is entertaining, and the stakes are high for these characters, making the action move quickly. While this reviewer was unable to get past the unrealistic plot elements, like two national competitions resulting in first- and second-place winners from the same small town, those who are able to suspend disbelief will enjoy the antics of these children and their pets. Inspired by her brother Bruce's struggle to help his abused and neglected dog, Red Rover, get over his past, Andi writes a creative story about it. When she enters it into a contest, however, their neighborhood nemesis and Red Rover's former abusive owner, Jerry Gordon, wins the contest. Determined to have Red Rover's story heard, Andi and Bruce decide to make it into a film for another contest. Their film soon gets noticed by a Hollywood producer, who wants to take it to the big screen. Jerry, though, is not too keen about his story becoming publicly known - and will stop at nothing to prevent this film from coming into being. Can Andi and Bruce see their dreams come true for both them and Red Rover, or will Jerry get his way? MOVIE FOR DOGS is a great book for dog lovers. The characters are well-developed; the plot is well-done and holds the reader's attention well. Those who liked the film or book version of HOTEL FOR DOGS, or who like books with animals, adventure, and realistic fiction, will all enjoy reading this sequel.
