Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Aimed at early elementary school children, this book boasts cute pictures, likable kids and brief science blurbs. These virtues will carry the book, but the story is a flimsy excuse to get to the physics, and unfortunately, the story doesn't always hold together. The basic premise is that the kids go to the carnival. The first unbelievable part is that the children get up at 6:00 a.m. Their excitement, and their feeling of already being late, shows in the pictures. However, it is hard to believe a carnival is open that early. The audience has to accept the idea of an early carnival, but then it gets a little more interesting. The pair of kids looks at the bumper cars, and a short sidebar explains: "You can move many objects by pushing or pulling. The more force you use to push an object the farther and faster it will move." While the term force is never formally defined, it is shown fairly well in context. The pair of kids takes a ride on the bumper cars and learns about objects in motion. Then they play a dunking game and ride a spinning ride. This brief introduction to physics will not overwhelm anyone and may get kids primed for more. Back matter includes a motion activity, glossary, listing of books and websites. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
