It all started as a young lad. I would deliver newspapers to the home of our Mayor. As I would deliver those papers I would sometimes think to myself, “Someday I’ll have your job.” I didn’t even know what a Mayor did but I somehow felt destined to be one. And I did, again and again and again.

I learned what a Mayor does. They go to meetings. Nothing happens until there is a meeting. Nothing.
I learned that when a constituent had a problem or concern, they didn’t know how to prepare for their meeting. When they came to their meeting unprepared, they normally lost.
That is what Moving Mountains and Molehills is all about. How to prepare for the meeting. I give detailed instructions who to talk to, how to talk to them, and how to prepare what you are going to say at the meeting. I even give you a fill in the blank check list so you don’t forget to do something you absolutely have to do. I give you everything to fight city hall.
Some people just feel destined to do something, or be someone. That was how I felt about being Mayor of my hometown. I just knew at a very early age that I would eventually be Mayor. I didn't know why. To be perfectly honest, at that age, I didn't know for sure what a Mayor even did. But, I was going to be Mayor. There was no doubt about that.
So, while most boys were dreaming about being a sports hero, or just beginning to discover girls, here I was believing I was destined to become a Mayor.
After four years of college, followed by three years of living the big city life, I moved back to my hometown, my growing interest in local politics coinciding with that move. Within a couple of years, I was doing editorial cartoons for the local newspaper.
Then, without any other political experience, I ran for Mayor. A three-term incumbent was my target. When asked why I ran at that time, I responded, "I didn't like the guy," and, "it was time." I won. Then I won again and again.
In addition to being a Mayor I also served as a County Board Supervisor.
Presently, I am the Local Government Affairs Director for the Realtors® Association of Northwestern Wisconsin.
Over 30 years of local government experience resulted in the book Moving Mountains and Molehills Local Politics 101. A self help book how to Fight City Hall. A step by step approach how to prepare for "The Meeting." Nothing gets decided in politics without a meeting and you had better be prepared for it. If you aren't prepared you will lose.
