Great stories!!!

All of these stories were great. I really fell in love with some of the characters too. Completely different stories, but they all tie together with their love of the world of Valdemar. Great book to read anywhere!

    ok

Because this is an anthology I am willing to cut the editor a little slack. But, in my opinion, this book is not up to the standard of her previous anthologies. It's like she was in a hurry to find stories to fill the book and didn't really pick and choose with care. It needed to cook a little longer.

    Good Reading

The stories were good reading. Most were right in the ball park with the subject and satisfying to read. It is fun to get other authors perspective on the series. This book is good for the personal library and will be read again.

    Moving Targets

As always the characters for Mercedes Lackey continue to move me. Though not particularly a fan of short stories I do collect the Herald series so I include the short stories in that collcetion. In the short amount of time that these stories take up I find myself completely engrossed within them enough to be moved to tears at the loss of one of these very believable characters. The writers have brought people to life within these pages, people that touch you trough their trials and every day tribulations. The writers have kept the tone of M. Lackey's original books so these new characters reside well within the walls of the Herald Mage series. If you are at all interested in time well spent I highly recommend Moving Targets.

These tales hit the target in Moving Targets!

This is an anothology that I really enjoyed. It offered stories written by 14 authors which offered their views of what could happen in Lackey's world of Valdemar and with her heralds. I enjoy her stories and her world. I keep all of her books in my permanent library.

    Anthologies are like Popcorn

Short story anthologies are like popcorn or potato chips; bet you can't read just one. For those who are fans of Valdemar, you'll probably read
this in one evening. It's a quick and interesting read for anyone, although I think knowledge of the series is helpful to orient each story. The story variety is good, and the placement in regard to each writer's style works well and is a tribute to Ms. Lackey's editorial skills. I was mildly disappointed by the story from the editor, but I
suspect that is because it was over too soon.

So So - A Good Read But Not a Great One

I have read all of Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books, including short story anthologies like this one. In comparison to Crossroads, Sword of Ice, and Sun in Glory, this anthology is a so-so 4th. I enjoyed the book, but the stories were shallower and less griping than the short stories in the first three anthologies. Even the short story by Mercedes Lackey is campy and not nearly as powerful and touching as her short story contributions to Crossroads, Sword of Ice, and Sun in Glory. Few of the stories inspired the wonder and sometimes bittersweet-ness of life in this richly detailed and magical world. I'm keeping the book but I'm disappointed at the level of effort.
