Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5-7-It's the summer before sixth grade, and Jonathan is passing long, hot Texas days with his six-year-old brother and their strict baby-sitter; sweltering at his evening baseball games as a catcher; and missing Randy, who's away at church camp. Indeed, he often thinks of joining his friend next year, as the only Jewish camper. The monotony is broken when a resident in a nearby assisted-living facility appears in the neighborhood about the time that area cats are dying and tells Jonathan that he has moxie. The boy and his family befriend Mr. Caliberti; later, Jonathan's courage is evident when he rescues a toddler left in a parking lot during a convenience-store power failure and, on another occasion, administers CPR to the old man. The fast-paced plot features a humorous, convincing first-person narrative with digressions that may confuse struggling readers, but portrays the protagonist as likable and with dimension. Jonathan's wish for fun and fulfillment dovetails with the man's mourning of lost opportunities and desire to enjoy his remaining days, and offers points for discussion. While the cat mystery goes unsolved, readers will enjoy the distinctive folks in this novel.-Laura Scott, Farmington Community Library, MI
