Overview

Another of Naxos's ongoing series of historic reissues -- called Great Opera Recordings -- more than earns its name with one more masterful Obert-Thorn transfer: this one of Sir Thomas Beecham's famous 1938 Berlin recording of Mozart's The Magic Flute.

In addition to an ideal cast headed by the Danish heldentenor Helge Rosvaenge as Tamino, the suave Gerhard Hüsch as Papageno, and the eternally youthful Erna Berger as the Queen of the Night, this remains one of the most vivid and beautifully sung of all Magic Flute recordings and certainly the most thrillingly conducted. As always, this great Mozartean mixes joy, wit, warmth and a sense of purpose in a way that remains impossible to resist.
