Mozart: Don Giovanni

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
The only well-known name on this budget-priced recording is the Danish baritone Bo Skovhus. But don't let the lack of star singers worry you, for this is a fine performance all around. Skovhus is a smooth Don, with a dignified demeanor and an appropriately demonic edge. Renato Girolami is a robust Leporello and an able comedian, and Torsten Karl's Don Ottavio deserves special praise, not only for his sweet, strong tone but also for providing backbone to a character that so often seems like a milquetoast. The women are also strongly cast -- although one wonders whether Regina Schörg Donna Elvira and Adrianne Pieczonka Donna Anna should have changed roles, as Schörg has a more youthful sound. Ildikó Raimondi's Zerlina is a bit faceless, perhaps, but gracefully sung. The orchestral playing is alert, and conductor Michael Halász shapes the drama quite effectively, favoring flowing tempos. There are some very distinguished interpretations of Don Giovanni available, such as Giulini's magisterial account on EMI, but this bargain newcomer is considerably more enjoyable than many other big-name productions and should provide cost-conscious collectors with considerable pleasure. Note: The libretto is in Italian only, though a detailed English synopsis is provided.
