Overview

Murray Perahia's Mozartean credentials are impeccable. His recordings of all of Mozart's piano concertos have been showered with accolades. This is his first disc of Mozart's solo sonatas, and it's among the best in the catalog. Perahia offers three very different works, showing what expressive miracles Mozart accomplished within a fairly limited form. The Sonata in A Minor is the most dramatic of the entire set, especially in the majestic and moody first movement. The popular Sonata in A Major boasts a gracious and unforgettable theme with variations and the famous Turkish Rondo. The Sonata in F Major begins lyrically, so the unbuttoned romp of the finale is a real surprise, and Mozart gives the player plenty of opportunities to show off his dexterity. Perahia digs deep into the music to extract the essence of every turn of phrase, finding the beauty that resides beneath the music's elegant surface.
