Overview

Although this collection of arias was released mostly for technical reasons -- namely, the ability of the SACD format to realize the original sound of Philips' quadraphonic recordings from the 1970s, which never transferred well to LP and CD -- fans of Elly Ameling won't need a new stereo to appreciate its value. Since Ameling devoted almost her entire career to art song and oratorio singing, it represents a rare opportunity to hear her approach to dramatic singing. Ameling certainly focused her career as she did for a reason: the scale, timbre, and natural suppleness of her voice were better suited to more intimate, word-oriented settings than to theatrical drama. And these arias bear that out: the Mozart arias in particular, while very elegantly sung, lack a sense of connection to their contexts -- to the bubbling elements of character that underlie the tunes. But the Schubert performances are not only elegant and stylish, but also dramatically engaged and lively. Perhaps Ameling's career-long immersion in the German language makes the difference. "Welche Nacht hab'ich erlebt" from "Die Bürgschaft" alone is enough to make one wonder what might have happened if Ameling had devoted more of her energy to exploring opera; it is an electric performance. And the concert arias among the Mozart selections come off extremely well, especially the opening "Chi sà, chi sà qual sia" and "Vado, ma dove? oh Dei!" Both are easily among the better performances on record. Audiophiles with access to SACD components will enjoy the opportunity to hear one of the best-loved singers of the last 30 years in the fullest, deepest sound possible, and fans of Ameling will certainly recognize her best qualities in every track: the elegance of her line, her attention to text, and the appealing purity of her sound.
