Mozart: Symphonies, Vol. 6 (1772-73)

All Music Guide - Mike D. Brownell
Vol. 6 of the Danish Radio Sinfonietta's tour of the complete Mozart symphonies under conductor Adam Fischer focuses on the years 1772 and 1773. As with previous volumes, the liner notes open with Fischer's bizarre, rambling, and at times anthropomorphic musings about each of the symphonies; this is followed by a thorough, insightful discussion of Classicism by Claus Johansen that brilliantly puts the symphonies into historical context. Despite his eccentric descriptions, Fischer again puts the Sinfonietta through its paces in another stellar, energetic reading of these four infrequently performed symphonies. Fischer uses the polished technical abilities of the orchestra to his full advantage and chooses tempos that are generally quick and playful throughout, breathing new life into the program. Even the slow movements they are all Andantes are forward moving, never allowing the listener's attention to wander but also never seeming rushed or hurried. Intonation is always very tight, articulation is clean and crisp, and balance throughout the orchestra is exceptional. Although playing on modern instruments, the Sinfonietta sound is never heavy or overbearing. Rather, they achieve a tone as close to a period performance as is imaginable on modern instruments. Another fine volume in what's sure to be a splendid complete collection, those seeking to build their Mozart libraries would do well with this album.
