For collectors, the all-in-one format certainly has the advantage of convenience, for Mutter's previous recordings are on different labels: The Third and Fifth concertos, accompanied by von Karajan, are currently in Deutsche Grammophon's "The Originals" series, while the remaining three, with Muti and Marriner conducting, comprise one of EMI's "Great Artists of the Century" releases. Moreover, the new set offers fresh attractions: Tempos are invariably a shade faster this time around, though not by much; Mutter's lustrous tone, interpretative élan, and technical command are, if anything, even more finely honed; and the brisk, sharp-edged accompaniment of a cut-back London Philharmonic provides the violinist with ideal support. As an added bonus to round out the set, leading violist Yuri Bashmet joins Mutter for the great Sinfonia Concertante, their hot-blooded playing styles perfectly matched in a performance filled with flair and full-bodied timbre.

Anne-Sophie Mutter's debut recording was of Mozart's "Third" and Fifth violin concertos, made when she was 15 years old, with conductor Herbert von Karajan. In 2003, she returned to Mozart, recording all five of the concertos and the "Sinfonia concertante" as both violinist and conductor. Mutter is accompanied by the London Philharmonic, and in the "Sinfonia" is joined by violist Yuri Bashmet. Mutter's more mature tone and technique are on display in this popular set of concertos.

    Mozart: Violin Sonatas

    Quintessential Anne-Sophie Mutter

    There are only two violinists on the "yellow label" who this listener recommends: Hilary Hahn and Anne-Sophie Mutter. I had given Ms. Hahn a glowing review of her Mozart Violin Sonatas with Natalie Zhu. I am equally enthralled by Ms. Mutter's towering performance of the Mozart Violin Concertos.
    For once, DGG gets it right. Mutter is perhaps this label's most endeared performer, and she shows it. Outright, Mutter emancipates herself by boldly proclaiming that Mozart has been with her at every juncture of her career. She demonstrates such fervent affections in her deliberate pacing, dramatic tempos and songful andantes. Indeed, she even commandeers the orchestra so that every note could be preserved in the widest dynamic range.
    This recording also includes a beautiful rendering of the Sinfonia Concertante with Bashmet never being so sublime as he is here. It is indeed a sparkling display of romantic vibrato without sacrificing the true intent of the score.
    Overall, this recording is in the demonstration bracket. Highly recommended indeed, and is among the few DGG Essential Recordings
