Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Known for his "Flashman" series, Fraser here offers protagonist Mark J. Franklin, a wealthy cowboy who expatriates to England in the early 20th century. Once firmly ensconced on British soil, he experiences a series of pleasant adventures with a bevy of unusual characters. (LJ 7/81)
From Barnes & Noble
Even old General Flashman, who knew something of men and mischief, never guessed the whole truth about mysterious Mark Franklin, the tall, dark, and dangerous stranger from America who came to London with two long-barrelled .44s in his baggage and a secret in his past. "A splendidly entertaining English novel of the old school."-- Time Magazine.

One of the sweetest novels I have read

This is Fraser at his best - great historical detail, compelling story-telling with appropraiate intervals of humor and farce. A touching story of a wanderer trying to set down roots in a new country. Fraser's abiding sentimentality for the virtues of an earlier time and his affection for things Anglo-American come through vividly. The book I would save from a burning library.
