Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-When a fierce storm destroys the tree that housed the Rabbit-Bunn, Hoot-Toowit, and Buzz families, Mr. Bear packs his trusty baby buggy full of tools and heads out to the rescue. Though most of his efforts to put things right are more valiant than effective, his heart is clearly in the right place and with a little luck he gets everyone back to his house safely. Once the storm passes, Mrs. Bear works her magic mending hive and nest. Love of family and friends is evident in both text and illustration and the happily-ever-after factor is strong. With all the natural disasters in the world-the fire and earthquake drills, tornado and hurricane watches-this reassuring book could be just the thing to encourage discussion or to comfort nervous youngsters. Gliori's watercolor cartoons are a delightful blend of warmth, color, humor, and detail. The double-page spreads of Mr. Bear trudging uphill against the driving rain are very effective as is the depiction of his cozy home and the intricate bark on the trees. Though some may find the family names cutesy, the text has a simplicity and directness sure to appeal to the audience for whom this book was carefully crafted. A genuine, warm-and-fuzzy read.- Jody McCoy, The Bush School, Seattle, WA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
From The Critics
Mr. Bear has a very kind heart, a somewhat clumsy step, and a very resourceful wife. One night he and his wife are sung in their bed on a wild and windy night when they hear their neighbor RabbitBunn cry out that the warren has collapsed. The wind has also knocked down the owl neXxt, the beehive is ruined, and bunny baby Flora can't be found anywhere. Mr. Bear heads out into the storm to the rescue. Mr. Bear To The Rescue is a delightful picturebook story and highly recommended, entertaining reading for young children preschool through first grade.
Kirkus Reviews
Gliori's Mr. Bear books manage to be heartwarming while avoiding any saccharine aftertaste, mostly because Mr. Bear is such a hapless old beast, a bungling agent of good (No Matter What, 1999, etc.). In his latest saga, he must dive into the stormy night in aid of his woodland neighbors. The tree house that the rabbits, owls, and bees—the Rabbit-Bunns, the Hoot-Toowits, and the Buzz families—call home has gone crashing to the ground, and young Flora, of the Rabbit-Bunns, is missing. Not particularly resourceful, not particularly brave, Mr. Bear nonetheless moves out into the windy darkness, ready to do the right thing. Reaching the scene of the disaster, he gathers the shattered hive and nest and all the bedraggled creatures, including Flora, who is rescued in an act of inadvertent derring-do, and he takes them home. While Mr. Bear goes to sleep on his laurels, Mrs. Bear gets down to the unheralded task of knitting together that nest and hive. Burnished colors and an air of sweet neighborliness pervade this book, where even the wild feels like a snug place when Mr. Bear is in the picture. (Picture book. 3-6)
