Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Mr. Bear and his family learn that vacations can sometimes be an adventure, but other times you need a vacation to recover from the vacation. Unfortunately, while the idea might be compelling, the execution in this instance is a bit too syrupy and contrived--a family of bears who are obviously living in the woods head off on a camping trip with diapers, sunblock, and a moth-eaten tent. They forget the sleeping bags, burn the hotdogs, and shriek at the owl. Children may laugh at the turned-around humor of having a cow knock over the tent, scaring the bears, but the illustrations and the language are not sufficiently memorable to make this a favorite bedtime tale. 2000, Orchard Books, Ages 3 to 5, $15.95. PreS-Mr. Bear and his family are back, and this time they take their tent and set off on an adventure. After the weather turns chilly and their moth-eaten tent is visited by a frightening "monster" calling "Moo!," the bears head for home. Bright, watercolor illustrations on double-page spreads feature cartoon-style bears with wonderfully expressive faces. Each picture has details for observant children, from a teapot with a bear-shaped knob on the lid to the cows in the distance when the bear family selects its camping site. Preschoolers and their parents will recognize much of the adult-child interplay ("Are we there yet?"), although the conclusion that the family needs another vacation to recover from this one will fly over the heads of most listeners. Nevertheless, the warm illustrations and understated text will allow children to meet a secure and loving family that experiences an adventure close to home.-Faith Brautigam, Gail Borden Public Library, Elgin, IL Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
