Mr. Cinders (London Revival Cast)

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
The late-'20s British musical Mr Cinders, with music by Vivian Ellis and Richard Myers, and book and lyrics by Clifford Grey and Greatrex Newman, was a modern version of Cinderella transferred, as its title suggested, to the male sex.
After a 13-week tour of the country, it opened in London on February 11, 1929, and proceeded to run a successful 529 performances, charming audiences with such songs as "Spread a Little Happiness" and amusing them with the novelty "On the Amazon." The show enjoyed productions in Europe and Australia in the early '30s, but otherwise was largely forgotten until 1982, when Sting, the lead singer of the Police, starred in the movie Brimstone & Treacle and scored his first solo hit in the U.K. with his rendition of "Spread a Little Happiness," which was heard in the film. That inspired a revival production which opened in a small London theater in January 1983 and transferred to the West End on April 19 for a run of 587 performances, besting the original staging. Although it was common by the '80s to drastically revise musicals of Mr Cinders' vintage for contemporary audiences, the revival kept relatively close to the original, only interpolating one Ellis song, "She's My Lovely," and adding a newly written one, "Please Mr. Cinders," while taking "Spread a Little Happiness" from the female lead and giving it to the male lead, played by Denis Lawson. Like the production, the cast album worked because the performers played the show straight in '20s style rather than camping it up too much (it was already a comedy, after all). Christina Matthews played off of Lawson well, and "On the Amazon" remained a rib-tickling absurdity, setting off the generally sweet, romantic tone of the other songs.
