Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leslie Verzi Julian
Mt. Davies has dissevered a welcome diversion to his days in the doghouse; a baby lives next door. Mr. Davies and the baby instantly adore one another, but are separated by a fence-at least temporarily, When Mr. Davies digs his way to freedom, he is able to accompany mother and baby on walks which lead to new discoveries, adventure, and a little trouble. Beginning readers should enjoy this story of neighborly love.
School Library Journal
PreS-Every day Mr. Davies, a little dog, watches the baby next door set off for a walk in a stroller pushed by his mother. One day, Mr. Davies discovers that he can squeeze under the gate, and he joins them. Not surprisingly, the excited dog gets into trouble when he chases ducks, a cat, and a cyclist. So the neighbor ties him to his doghouse with a strong rope. No one, though, is happy with this arrangement, until the baby's mother buys a leash and the threesome resume their walks. This appealing story and its engaging cast of characters will charm both the stroller crowd and their caregivers. Voake displays her usual craftsmanship, with finely etched drawings, subtle use of color, and hand-lettered text set against white backgrounds. On a few pages, the text threatens to overwhelm the smaller drawings it accompanies. Overall, though, this is an enjoyable outing and a potential choice for story times.-Marilyn Taniguchi, Santa Monica Public Library, CA
