wonderful series for young people about the history of hymns

Douglas Bond uses a fictional setting to tell the stories of many of the great hymns that have been sung in praise to God by believers through the years. As Michael McHugh said in the preface, "The worship of God in modern times has too often become shallow and man-centered. Many Christians at the opening of the twenty-first century, including young believers, have never understood the importance of approaching God with awesome reverence and majestic praise....Young Christians who grasp the significance of what they read will come to the wonderful realization that their worship is connected with the Church universal--the followers of Christ throughout the world, both past and present. In other words, young readers will understand that true worship is not isolated from believers of the past but is, rather, built upon their godly traditions." AMEN!
In the first book, youngsters Annie and Drew spend a summer in Olney, England, while their mother is doing research there, and meet David McCallum (Mr. Pipes), the village organist, who tells them about famous British hymnwriters. In the second, Mr. Pipes and Psalms and Hymns of the Reformation (2000), Mr. Pipes invites Drew and Annie to spend the next summer with him on vacation in Europe where they learn about the hymnwriters of the Reformation. In the third, Mr. Pipes Comes to America (2001), Annie and Drew invite Mr. Pipes to visit them in America for the following Christmas holidays, and he talks to them about well-known American hymnwriters.
I think that these books are really good and serve a very important function. My wife Karen said that when I began reading these books aloud, she was afraid that they would be rather dry but found that the fictional plots into which the hymn stories were woven made the books quite interesting. The boys at first thought they were kind of boring, but as we continued they seemed to enjoy them too. Since one of my special interests is the history and background of hymns, I believe that these books are great.
