Mr. Popper has penguins in his fridge, an ice rink in the basement, and a family for whom life will never be the same
How many penguins in the house is too many? Mr. Popper is a humble house painter living in Stillwater who dreams of faraway places like the South Pole. When an explorer responds to his letter by sending him a penguin named Captain Cook, Mr. Popper and his family's lives change forever. Soon one penguin becomes twelve, and the Poppers must set out on their own adventure to preserve their home.
First published in 1938, Mr. Popper's Penguins is a classic tale that has enchanted young readers for generations.
This enhanced ebook features an illustrated biography of Richard and Florence Atwater including rare photos from the authors' estate, as well as a two videos from Fox Entertainment: a brief documentary on the legacy of Mr. Popper's Penguins and the complete 2011 motion picture trailer.

When I was younger, I loved this book. I still like it alot today. My family read it out loud to eachother, and we had fun squeaking like penquins and playing like we were sliding off iceburgs. I think any kid that likes animals and good stories would like this book. And any adult that likes to laugh should like it too.

When my sister and I were young, we rushed to brush our teeth and get into bed so that our father could read another chapter of this wonderful book. The story is delightful and my own young son has enjoyed the book many times over.

Mr. Popper is a housepainter and decorator who spends most of his free time reading about polar explorers. He sent a letter to Admiral Drake saying how silly penguins are. Mr. Popper listened to the radio to hear Drake's report from the Antarctic. The Admiral said, 'Hello, Mamma. Hello, Papa ¿ Hello, Mr. Popper up there in Stillwater. Thanks for your nice letter about the picture of our last expedition. Watch for an answer. But not by a letter, Mr. Popper. Watch for a surprise.' Now the fun begins! This book is very funny because of all the silly things the Poppers do to keep their penguins alive and happy. How do you keep penguins happy? How do you keep them out of trouble? How do you feed a penguin? Read this book to find out. People who like comedies would like to read this book. I think this book would be for kids 8 to 12 if you read alone and 6 to 7 if an adult is reading aloud.

Mr. Popper's Penguins is a great book to occupy the whole famliy. It's simple enough for young kids and interesting and fast-paced enough for older kids and parents. Mr. Popper's Penguins has always been and always will be my favorite!

This book is wonderful. The movie's good but it's nothing like thebook.
When Mr Popper lustens to the radio one night a famous Arctic explorer announces that he received a letter from Mr Popper and a special package for him shall arrive soon. And guess whatsin that package? Penguins. Thisbspirals a series of events that includes a seal, the circus, and Antarctica. This is sure to be hit for tje whole family!

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged. My Four-Year-Old is just beginning to be interested in having chapter books read to her. But as she gets stressed out by conflict of any sort, it's kind of tough finding good candidates for her. This is a winner.
For those of you who haven't read the book, the basic premise is that a house painter who spends his off-hours reading about (and writing to) explorers in the South Pole receives a penguin in the mail from one of those explorers. Since his work is over for the winter, he becomes very involved in the comfort and care of said penguin (and the eleven other penguins that quickly follow). In the end, he transforms his basement into an ice rink (an idea my daughter wholeheartedly supports, by the way), and spends more than his wife ever thought possible on fish and canned shrimp.
I won't tell you how an out-of-work house painter manages to pay for all that (wouldn't want to spoil the ending), but I will say that the process is highly entertaining for all involved. I found myself looking forward to each night's installment of Mr. Popper nearly as much as The Four-Year-Old.
Although I personally found the ending to be highly improbable, The Four-Year-Old saw nothing at all the matter with it--except for that little bit of unpleasantness with the policemen and firemen--and has spent many a happy evening reenacting the finale in the bathtub.
And now, if you will excuse me, I need to go read Mr. Popper's Penguins to The Four-Year-Old again. I promised her I would as soon as I finished writing the review.

This book is very great. I loved the part when the penguin named Captain Cook went into the refrigerator. That had me laughing for hours. I liked this book so much that four years ago my second grade class and I did a play on it. I thought it was clever how Mr. and Mrs. Popper put water in their basement and froze it so the penguins could have a place to play. I could not believe it when Captain Cook¿s mate named Greta had twenty-four little baby penguins. This book was brilliant. I would read it again. I liked this book because it was humorous and I enjoyed the plot of the book. I would highly recommend it.

My father read this book to me when I was little. We read it so many times I had the book almost memorized. Reading a couple chapters everynight before I went to bed is one of my best memories.
