Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book offers an introduction to the U.S. Presidents, giving a brief biography of each as well as the important events during their terms in office. A black-and-white portrait accompanies each entry and often another photo to help place the president within a larger context. There are, for example, photos of Clara Barton, Suffragettes in 1912 and Jesse Owens at the 1936 Olympics. Although there is not a lot of depth in each entry, this title is a good summary of the Presidents and a fine starting place for exploring the history and accomplishments of these American leaders. It is easy to read with interesting information that should inspire students to further, more detailed, research. Sullivan shares tidbits of information on the Presidents' families as well, mentioning some wives and the occupations of some parents. He also lists the "previous experience" of each President before taking office. While most were lawyers, military men or politicians, readers will be intrigued to find that Washington, Truman and Carter were farmers, Garfield and Wilson were teachers and Andrew Jackson was a tailor. Sullivan also includes information on how the President is elected, the electoral vote and the presidential cabinet. 2005 (orig. 1984), Scholastic, Ages 9 to 12.
