Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carol Kirkham Martin
Meet Little League pitcher David Gray in this recent addition to the "Impact Books" series. David is known as Mr. Strike Out, not only for his pitching success, but also for his miserable batting average. It is his friend, Andy, who stands up for him when a teammate, Mark, delights in reminding David of his failed attempts at the bat. At first, David sidesteps John's offer to coach him. However, when even his excellent pitching is no longer enough to win games, David seeks out John's help. Using a tee stand, David begins to hit the ball and feel the joy of success. John convinces him to think like a hitter and focus on getting the ball to the outfield. David's struggle with this familiar problem and the sports-related subject matter are sure to appeal to the hard-to-engage boy reader. The story is well-plotted into short chapters, each with several black and white illustrations. The age-appropriate subject matter, use of high frequency words and short, simple sentences make this a great choice for struggling readers.
