Editorial Reviews
From The Critics
Reviewer: Joel R. Meyer, MD(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)Description: This is an atlas of normal multiplanar imaging anatomy of the head and neck. In addition to conventional T1- and T2-weighted images, fast spin-echo, and 3-dimensional spoiled gradient-echo images, postcontrast T1-weighted images and MR angiography of the head and neck are also included. A separate section demonstrating normal cranial nerve imaging anatomy is also included.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an easy-to-use imaging anatomic atlas for reference in learning complex anatomic relationships in the head and neck. Clearly, a thorough understanding of anatomy in multiple planes is essential for those involved in obtaining and interpreting images of this region.
Audience: The book would probably be best used at the alternator or in the control room of an MR scanner by MR technologists, medical students, fellows, and general radiologists involved in head and neck imaging.
Features: The large field of view format used in the majority of the book is useful for technologists learning anatomy necessary to scan patients, but it does not provide enough detail for physicians involved in interpreting MR images. Furthermore, fat suppression techniques, which are used extensively when imaging the head and neck, are not included in this book. Despite these limitations, the authors have met their objective by providing clearly labeled state-of-the-art MR images of basic anatomy of the head and neck. The index is well organized and useful in that an area of anatomic interest is referenced by imaging plane.
Assessment: This book provides a concise review of basic anatomy of the head and neck. Several areas of complex anatomy that are typically evaluated with targeted high-resolution MRI are illustrated rather superficially. This makes the book of limited utility to neuroradiologists and dedicated head and neck imagers. It does, however, provide a easy-to-use reference for technologists, medical students, and radiology residents who are learning imaging anatomy of the head and neck.

A high-quality MRI atlas of sequential normal anatomy in three dimensions with brief annotations sufficiently detailed to facilitate difficult imaging interpretations. The atlas identifies each division and component of the brain and cerebellum, the cranial nerves, and many of their end organs, as well as their blood supply. The terminology used is a compromise between usual radiologic and anatomic usage and Nomina Anatomica; the most commonly employed terminology is used in the labeling of figures, with other commonly used synonyms included in the index. For those interested in head and neck MRI techniques, including radiologic technicians and medical students as well as physicians and medical specialists. Annotation c.
