Thoroughly updated with state-of-the-art techniques, expanded applications, advances in MR arthrography and other evolving modalities, and new images on almost every page, the Fifth Edition of this classic text is a current, comprehensive guide to musculoskeletal MRI. Leading experts show readers how to select appropriate imaging techniques and use MRI to evaluate specific clinical problems in each anatomic region.

This edition has many new anatomic images designed to improve localization of nerves and vessels. More than half of the previous edition's MRI scans have been replaced by new ones obtained with the latest techniques. Other highlights include expanded coverage of pediatric applications.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Travis Scott Graham, MD (University of Colorado Health Sciences Center)
Description: This is an all encompassing book on MRI of the musculoskeletal system. This updates the previous edition of 2001.
Purpose: The fifth edition is an attempt to cover the significant updates that have occurred and are occurring in the field of musculoskeletal imaging as it pertains to MRI. These worthy objectives are met exceedingly well.
Audience: This is intended for a wide audience, physicians, residents, students, and other healthcare professionals involved with musculoskeletal imaging. The author is a credible source and authority on the subject.
Features: Not only are individual joints discussed, but a complete overview is presented here, from the basic principles of magnetic resonance imaging to interpretation and technical considerations for musculoskeletal MRI to clinical spectroscopy. This book offers an encyclopedic look at a weighty topic and is replete with tables, illustrations, graphs, and images.
Assessment: Almost encyclopedic, this book is inclusive enough to be the "go-to" book for nearly any question that an imager or a clinician may have on the topic of musculoskeletal MRI. A welcome update from the 2001 version, this book will be well received by its intended audience.
B. J. Manaster
This third edition is a welcome addition to our literature. This book is intended as a comprehensive discussion of MR of the musculoskeletal system, including sections on MR technique, normal anatomy, and pathology. It is designed for radiology residents as well as practitioners. Dr. Berquist's expertise in the field is well known and the previous editions of this book were well used, but updating was necessary, particularly as new, faster MR techniques emerged. This edition increases the page count from 540 to 940. Most of the increase is the result of the addition of illustrations. More than half of these additions are MR examples of pathology, very welcome in a text of this scope. A large number of the additional illustrations, however, are anatomic drawings. These are rather dark and not attractively shaded. In some instances, they duplicate the high quality, well-labeled MR illustrations. However, a critical assessment demonstrates that the drawings often make subtle anatomic points (such as the location of the neurovascular bundles) that are not easily illustrated with MR examples. Therefore, they are a welcome addition, making the anatomic description exhaustive and excellent overall. Other important updates include those on techniques, especially using fast spin echo. Very practical advice is given on how to efficiently choose sequences and maximize their diagnostic value. There are very few omissions, although some subtle sports-related injuries, especially involving the knee and ankle, could be more extensively illustrated. In the sections based on pathology rather than anatomy, the greatest improvement is found in the tumor section. Dr. Kransdorf is an eminent contributor whohas formulated credible generalizations as well as specific descriptions. Many of the new images are of those entities that truly have specific MR features, an important improvement in this edition. Also of note is the chapter on marrow disorders, in which Dr. Vogler includes drawings, charts, and explanations of normal age-related appearance of marrow, its appearance with various pulse sequences, and examples of pathology. The additions and improvements in this third edition are substantial enough to fully justify a new investment on the part of the radiologist.
New edition of a text that provides updates on principles, techniques, and applications for musculoskeletal MRI. Berquist (diagnostic radiology, Mayo Medical School) presents 16 contributions that cover basic principles; interpretation of MR images using commonly employed pulse sequences; general principles concerning positioning, coil selection, pulse sequence, and new data on MR safety and effects of magnetic fields on metallic implants; several anatomically oriented discussions with expanded illustrations in multiple image planes to enhance demonstrated anatomy; neoplasms; infection; marrow disorders; new and developing techniques; and basic applications of spectroscopy. Extensively illustrated with b&w drawings and images. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
From The Critics
Reviewer: Yulia Melenevsky, MD (Medical College of Georgia)
Description: This is an update of a comprehensive review of musculoskeletal MRI previously published in 2006.
Purpose: It is one of the few books currently available that details the basic technical information and protocols related to musculoskeletal MRI and outlines normal MRI anatomy and common disease processes.
Audience: Clearly written and well organized, this book is appropriate for radiology residents and fellows early in their training, as well as general radiologists interpreting musculoskeletal MRI studies. However, students may find this comprehensive book too advanced for their level of training.
Features: "After chapters on basic technical concepts and general principles of MR imaging, key MR safety concepts, sedation, contrast, and artifacts are discussed. Organized by anatomic region, the book covers normal anatomy and a variety of pathological conditions. Recognizing the importance and complexity of these issues, the book includes separate chapters on neoplasms, infections, and marrow disorders. Clinical images are supplemented by illustrations and summarizing tables. Although image quality is generally very good, some radiographic findings do not project well. There is a good discussion of imaging optimization, but the MR appearance of complications in joint arthroplasty is not discussed. The fully searchable full text and a normal anatomy quiz are available online. "
Assessment: This well-written and comprehensive book successfully summarizes the broad topic of musculoskeletal MRI. This edition is a significant update, featuring new images and references and including online access. Overall, it is an excellent practical resource for residents or general radiologists interpreting musculoskeletal MRI.
