Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Pat Simon
From a hamster named Roly-poly Ravioli the Third, to a goldfish named G, from slimy creatures in book bags to presents for the teacher, from favorite pencils to birthday crowns, this collection of poems highlights the crazy days of school life. Bold, bright illustrations capture the light-hearted mood of the writings and the wacky celebrations and misadventures every child experiences. An excellent choice for reading aloud, this volume of poems is a great way to start the school year.
School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-In Dakos's third book of poems about school (If You're Not Here, Please Raise Your Hand [1990]; Don't Read This Book, Whatever You Do! [1993, both Four Winds]), the selections concern day-to-day happenings in the classroom, the cafeteria, and on the playground, as well as interactions among students and teachers. Unfortunately, the promise of a catchy title and cover illustration is not fulfilled by the 32 verses within. Their quality is average at best-some rhymes are forced, some are awkward to read aloud, and some of the attempts at merriment are so contrived that the response is more likely to be a groan than a giggle. The text is often superimposed on the full-color illustrations. The pictures are not as effective in extending the humor as the black-and-white cartoons by Brian Karas in the earlier volumes. If Dakos's other titles are popular, you'll want this one, too. However, Dorothy Kennedy's I Thought I'd Take My Rat to School (Little, 1993) is a better choice.-Carolyn Angus, The Claremont Graduate School, CA
Lauren Peterson
Although poems here are similar enough to be interchangeable with the poems about school life in Dakos' "Don't Read This Book, Whatever You Do!" (1993), the addition of a new illustrator has given the poetry a distinctly different look. Bizarre, full-color illustrations replace the cute black-and-white cartoons that so nicely complemented the previous volume. These new, weird pictures will undoubtedly appeal to youngsters, but they seem out of sync with the spirit of the text. The charming, childlike feel of the previous book is gone. Nevertheless, the 32 poems in the collection reflect Dakos' sensitivity to the behavior and emotions of elementary-school children. Whether about writing a love note or a child's anticipation of wearing the birthday crown, they capture the very essence of classroom life.
