Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In this tender and endearing Regency, first published by Signet in 1995, beautiful and brave Roxanna Drew must face the harsh realities of life alone with two young daughters after her husband dies. Forced to make the most of her small allowance, she moves into the nearby dower house of absentee landlord Lord Winn, a recent pariah of the ton after divorcing his disloyal wife and publicizing her list of lovers instead of remaining silent and accepting her cheating ways, as society would dictate. Winn visits unexpectedly, and he and Roxanna sense an immediate attraction to one another, but keep their feelings hidden even as their time together deepens their bond. When Roxanna’s future is threatened and Winn offers a life-changing solution, both must decide just how brave they can be. RITA-winner Kelly (The Surgeon’s Lady) spins passionate longing and hope into a story that will draw in and satisfy readers. (Sept.)
Library Journal
A resourceful young vicar's widow, desperate to escape her lecherous brother-in-law and provide for her two daughters, moves into the rundown dower house on a neglected estate and is surprised when a winter storm brings the estates' long-absent, scandal-ridden owner to her door and, eventually, into her family's life. A witty, emotional, and satisfying romance from one of traditional Regency's most respected authors, this RITA Award winner was originally published by Signet Regency in 1994 and is one of Kelly's best.

Exceptionally good historical romance. The characterizations, drama, and smiles are reminiscent of Mary Balogh (a favorite). Very well written. Not graphic, but there is enough description of their desire for one another, and the lead-up and aftermath, that you won't miss the details. Highly recommended. 236 pages.

A lovely story, well told. Roxanne and Winn are older, each with a history of real life damage, yet they each manage to go on, as we all must. They enter my small pantheon of favorite couples.

A Reader's Opinion: Mrs. Drew played every hand exceptionally well, and so did author Carla Kelly. I lay in bed reading this book and actually caught myself smiling many times. I couldn't remember the last time I had so thoroughly enjoyed a book. Roxanna Drew is an absolutely delightful and endearing heroine. Her strength, resilience, and love for her daughters is beautiful. The relationship she has with her children is so wonderfully written and each of them have very distinctive personalities, yet at the same, you can clearly tell they are related. Our lovely Fletcher, or Lord Winn and he's know for most of the book, is charming, straight-forward, and fun! Yes, he is so much fun. Despite his moments of seriousness and stubbornness, he's wonderfully fun and the relationship between he and Roxanna is not only sweet, but they truly enjoy each other. I laughed with them many times. The love is not instant between them, but rather a friendship that grows into an affectionate bond between two people who respect and care for one another. The love story is indeed lovely and develops at a very nearly perfect pace. It's also a wonderfully clean historical romance! The setting is just as it should be. The descriptions of the dower house and manor are clear, but not too detailed as to distract from the story. The trek to Scotland--excellent! You'll have to read it to know what I'm talking about. This is one of the best regency romances I have ever read, and I don't say that lightly. My only disappointment is that it had to end. Mrs. Drew, Lord Winn, and Carla Kelly get five stars and then some. Note: This book was provided by the publisher for an honest review during the author's book tour.

I have never read anything by this author until reading this story. I loved it! I think it was handled sensitively and honestly, and I really loved how she weaved the story. There was nothing explicit or heavily sensual in it and anything physical between the characters occurred after they married, which I appreciated, though the main characters had plenty of chemistry and she got the point across beautifully with few words and no sexual description! I didn't want the story to be over, and sure would have loved to see more of them! I will be reading more by this author.

Not every romance is a thriller, full of danger and angst. This book is a nice, even paced, realistic regency romance. Flowed well with believable characters in a good story line. Winn and Roxy are well matched, Lissy is a very believable 4 year old and most entertaining young lady. I will read more by this author. Loved this book
