School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1 Mrs. Dunphy read newspaper stories to her dog, James, every evening, and when she nodded off the dog would tear the paper apart. One night he reads a headline``Giant Flying Cat Terrifies Tots''and from then on, he is obsessed with the news and with telling his doubting animal friends about the stories. After being told that they are not true, he becomes upset, but he then discovers the world of books. But every once in a while he finds an astonishing headline like ``Court O.K.'s Library Card for Pooch!'' The sophisticated humor of this spoof on tabloids is most suitable for young Daniel Pinkwater fans who enjoy preposterous stories such as The Wuggie Norple Story (Four Winds, 1980). The bright comical pastel and pencil crayon illustrations match the flamboyant spirit of this unique dog's tall tale. Lorraine Douglas, Winnipeg Public Library, Manitoba, Canada
