School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-A selection of traditional poems by William Blake, Walter de la Mare, and Rudyard Kipling, among others. Lullabies from Scotland and New Zealand are included, as are better-known bedtime songs, such as "Brahms' Lullaby." Authors and sources are partially acknowledged at the end of the book. Beaton uses a mixture of appliqu , beadwork, and embroidery on felt to create richly textured, exquisite illustrations. The verses are set to music and sung by Dana Kletter on an accompanying CD. Kletter has a pleasant, clear voice, and instrumental music is provided by guitar, piano, banjo, accordion, clarinet, and bongos. While preschoolers may not be able to comprehend the subtlety of Beaton's palette and the inventiveness of the needlework, they will enjoy the pictures on a simple level. And parents will appreciate the artistry of these stunning fabric collages.-Jane Barrer, Washington Square Village Creative Steps, New York City Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
