MTV Unplugged in New York

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Sadly, MTV Unplugged stands as Nirvana's last album. While it's an album of covers and old songs, it ranks as one of the band's most cohesive records. Instead of relying on the trio's overpowering sonic force, Unplugged concentrates on Kurt Cobain's subtly shaded songwriting and Nirvana's deceptively simple musical power. Every version of their previously recorded songs, with the possible exception of "On a Plain," dramatically improves the original, and the covers reveal more about Cobain than he intended. It's also clear that they could have made even greater music.

    Indelible masterpiece

For my money, the best live record of the 90s, period. The Nirvana songs are broken down and reconstructed in a way that sounds fresh. The covers are interpreted in a way that no one has ever heard those songs like that before and Nirvana's versions forever change the way those songs are remembered. As the reviewer Erleweine noted, Kurt's on the brink of fashioning a new sound. But what I think is so amazing about the record is that sound is so timeless -- drop this record in the market 40 years ago or 40 years from now and it's as relevant and vibrant as it still remains today.

    Beyond Brilliance

I watched Kurt Cobain and Nirvana's Unplugged performance more than ten years ago before he died (doesn't seem that long ago), and I saw a group on the cusps of being on par with the Beatles. But we know now that wasn't meant to be. The songs here are more vivid and tortured from a true artist's voice than in any other Nirvana record. Nothing in modern times can compare with that CD in my mind, not even close. It's so beautiful and poignant to be haunting. Too bad, Kurt, you chose the wrong path.

    Untitled...?

Simply, uh, awesome. You know. It always is. Why does everyone remember "Lake Of Fire" as Nirvana's? I was so convinced. (Weeping). Anyway, that aside...I still haven't heard "Where did you sleep last night." I still have work to do, I guess. I can't make a decent review now, can I?

    It''s live, it's loud, it's GREAT...

If you are a new fan of Nirvana you will especially LOVE this album... Because not only are you getting all of their greatest hits from "Come As You Are" to "Smells Like Teen Spirt", you are also getting live acoustic guitar sounds next to Kurt's edgy voice. You will especially love it if you enjoy more of Nirvana's softer material, since the whole album's acoustic, there's no better way to go. It's a great album. I recommend you buy it NOW!!!

Kurt wasn't a corporate rock sellout...

And this CD proves that. The emotion in his voice has driven me to tears on many occasions. Kurt was a real talent. It's a damn shame he went so soon. The song "Oh Me" always gets to me, and "All Apologies" became a song that really embodied the remembrance of a friend (who was actually buried with a copy of this CD).

    MTV Unplugged in New York

Almost everyone who’s into rock knows of NIRVANA’s album Nevermind, but what about MTV Unplugged in New York? The album was released on 11/1/1994 by GEFFEN RECORD. It is a recording of their live show “MTV Unplugged in New York”, and contains some covers such as “Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam” (originally by the Vaselines), “The Man Who Sold The World” (originally by David Bowie), “Plateau” (originally by the Meat Puppets) , “Oh, Me” (originally by the Meat Puppets), “Lake Of Fire” (originally by the Meat Puppets), and “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” (originally by David Bowie). I’d give this CD five stars. If you like NIRVANA then you should definitely buy this CD.

    Another Great Album by Nirvana

Nirvana was great and May Kurt continue to Rest in Peace. This shows us restrained hatred, and it is a break from Smells like Teen Spirit, a song that is great, but overshadows their other great songs.

    Very Well Done

This was pretty good stuff. I mean although it was all of their soft songs, it was good. It blew me away when I saw this preformed on Mtv. I highly reccomend this to anyone. There is a reason that this Cd sold 300,500 copies in the first week. Trust me on this one.

Nirvana : For all who listen

'Nirvana:Unplugged In New York': Passionate, spiritual and just pure blissful music from a magical performance that showed charasmatic, intense frontman Kurt Cobain as the passionate and accomplished writer he truley was. The bands performance; completey contrasting their usual guitar-tossing, amp-smashing, ''hardcore'' performance, was spellbinding. This album shows Nirvana in a new light, a true light, showing them to be passionate, intense and spiritual, and also shows the wide range of their music. Beautiful, cool album. Genius.
