    Good book, sort of westernized

This is a detailed book that covers punches, kicks, knees, elbows and clench fighting. The move is described and shown, then all the defenses against it are explained. Describes how to hold the diffrent kind of pads for striking. This is an important part of the training. Then there are workbook style sample combinations that let you choose what to work (good to keep from getting bored as a beginner). Also a brief section on preparing for a ring-fight, strategy/fighter styles, and self-defense. The downside is that techniques are sort of Westernized and there are some wrestling type moves that are more for mma (chokes takedowns) shown, not legal in MT. Not as much info on the rituals and spiritual side of traditional Muay Thai but more focused on the techniques. Lots of information on training with exercises and weights during the second half of the book. Body weight exercises, warm ups, abs, and partner exercises are first. Lifting technique is shown and described and programs to get in shape or get stronger follow in the next section. The end chapter is a motivation part that has workout sheets and goal setting. This book is a good reference to have for moves and espicially drills. But as it says you only can really learn by training and doing it, not just from reading and pictures.

    Great Kickboxing Book

Boykins' book is the most effective Muay Thai instructional that I have had the opportunity to read. It begins your journey with accurate explanation and history then leads you into a well developed method of instruction with the basics all the way through to the more adanced techniques. Along the way Boykin impresses you with excellent conditioning exercises, and if one desires to step into the ring Boykin explains the importance and ideals of being prepared, both physically and most importantly, obtaining the mental tenacity of an experienced fighter. This is one for the library, I have already utilized it while instructing students.

    Awesome training book!

This book was just what I have been looking for! There is some history and information referenced on the art aspects of Muay Thai, but mostly the book focuses on the training. There are technique descriptions with photos for each strike, diagrams, combinations, training plans, weight training, cardio conditioning, self-defense tips for women, and sample programs. I don't plan to fight in the ring but for self-defense I want to train as if I were. I got this book to help reinforce what I learn in the gym and it does just that!

    Excellent and Well Rounded

I found this book to be the most infomative on the subject(s) I have read to date. Mr. Boykin did a splendid job of organizing the subject matter. I especially like the way he presents health and physical fitness benefits that one may derive from the study of Muay Thai/Kickboxing ... this was well balanced in the book. Many of this type of book tend to lead too heavily in one direction or the other (fitness/competition)whereas, Mr. Boykin presents that well balanced presentation that will surely be invitation to many that would otherwise avoid Muay Thai/Kickboxing training. He makes his presentations in clear and concise text. Plenty of photograghs to aid in the understanding. This will go on my bookshelf... top shelf with my favorites. Thank you Mr. Boykin ... you have restored my faith in this type of 'martial art' study. As a martial art enthusiast, I look forward to seeing more of your work, ideas, and input.
