Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Uma Krishnaswami
Part of the publisher's "Blazers" series (other martial arts titles include Jujitsu, Kendo, Kung Fu, and Tae Kwon Do) this book opens with an account of a sixteenth century battle between King Narasuen of Thailand and the crown prince of Burma. When the soldiers found themselves without weapons they fought using their hands in a style that came to be known as Muay Thai. Sometimes known as "the art of eight limbs" Muay Thai is different from Western boxing. The book's brief chapters offer material on preparing for the ring, mastery and competition. Martial arts facts are included throughout addressing such points as the weapons training of Krabi Krabong from which this weaponless form originated, the youth of trainees, and the fact that music plays in the ring during a match. A double spread is occupied by a labeled photograph depicting a pair of boxers, and showing their gloves, shorts, punching bag, and the boxing ring. A final spread consists of an action photo of a Muay Thai kick. Some content terms are defined on the pages in which they occur. In addition, a glossary includes a single Thai term, "jod" or the readiness stance, as well as several other vocabulary words. Other back matter consists of a brief list of additional readings, a link to the FactHound Internet site, and an index. Reviewer: Uma Krishnaswami
