Overview

Award-winning photographer Mark Nixon has created a trove of quirky and nostalgic portraits of teddy bears and other stuffed animals that have been lovingly abused after years of play. MuchLoved collects 60 of these images along with their accompanying background tales. An exhibit in the photographer’s studio led to a small sensation on the Internet when a few of the pictures circulated unofficially on scores of blogs and on many legitimate news sites. Viewers have been intrigued by the funny, bittersweet images and their ironic juxtaposition of childhood innocence and aged, loving wear and tear.  When you see these teddy bears and bunnies with missing noses and undone stuffing, you can’t help but think back to childhood and its earliest companions who asked for nothing and gave a lot back.

Praise for Much Loved:

Much Loved is impossibly endearing in its entirety.” —Brain Pickings

Dublin-based photographer Nixon collects 65 portraits of well-worn stuffed animals and shares their ages and stories of their origins. Claiming Irving Penn as an influence to this project, Nixon embraces "the idea of making an everyday object become visible again." These "much-loved" objects are world travelers, defenders against unruly terriers, pirate adventurers, and comforters of the ailing. The youngest is 5 years old, the oldest is 102. Some are tattered and dread-locked, missing ears, limbs, eyes, and stuffing. One owner claims hers suffers from "teddy leprosy," another mild Tourette's. In addition to Bono's and Mr. Bean's bears, Nixon also includes his own childhood panda, as well as his son's Peter Rabbit, both of which inspired the project. He also introduces readers to Dublin's Dolls Hospital, a business specializing in the repair of dolls and stuffed toys. Finally, the book contains a blank page for the reader to add an image of his or her own special stuffed animal. The photographs range from hilarious, like the cover image of a bright pink bear with a pronounced frown, to monstrous, like the remnants of a giraffe that resemble a horror movie prop. The project is both aesthetically pleasing and exceedingly charming. (Nov.)

My sister gave me this book for Christmas. It made me cry. I bet a lot more adults will come out of the "closet" with their "stuffed" stories. Everyone needs a copy in their homes.

I bought a copy for myself and for a good friend too. Very heartwarming photographs of stuffed animals that may be threadbare and saggy and worn, but still charming. I enjoyed the history of the toy also. I am a grandma and still have my teddy bear that I have had since I was a toddler, and I still buy stuffed animals now and then if they wave at me! So this book really appealed to me. Hope to see a sequel, and one on old dolls also!

My friend gave this to me as a gift since she knows that I still have my old stuffed animals. I absolutely loved this book! It is very charming, sweet, funny, and heartwarming. The photos are wonderful, and the descriptions by the owners are so whimsical and funny. I ordered four more copies for my friends. Highly recommend.

If you once loved a stuffed toy in your past, this is a great read. I love all the pictures that go with each story. Brought back lots of warm memories from my childhood.
