Overview

For the debut album of Cypress Hill DJ and House of Pain producer DJ Muggs, an excellent cast of MCs were assembled, including most of the best in hip-hop. It's hard to expect anything but uniform excellence from an album which includes Dr. Dre, Wu-Tang Clan's RZA and GZA/Genius, KRS-One, Mobb Deep, the Fugees' Wyclef Jean, Cypress Hill and MC Eiht, and though the diversity might appear a bit daunting, Muggs' mostly uniform production style ties the album together well. Most collaboration albums end up being spoiled by the number of cooks, but Muggs Presents the Soul Assassins, Chapter I is that rare exception. Among the many highlights are "Puppet Master" by Dr. Dre & B Real, "Third World" by RZA/GZA and "Move Ahead" by KRS-One.

Why does a litlle known hip-hop album deserve 5 stars? For a start Alchemist was the most underated producer for years after making beats for Cypress Hill, Mobb Deep and loads of other top class artists. Only now is he getting props. Muggs, who produced the classic 'Jump Around' for House of Pain, is also an underated producer but perhaps he deserves this status because it seems like he's stopped making good beats for Cypress Hill and saved his best material for... you guessed it Soul Assassins. Both volumes are produced entirely by DJ Muggs and the Alchemist and have ridiculously impressive lists of guest MCs. The first one includes Dr Dre, Gza/Genius with the Rza, Mobb Deep, MC Eiht, KRS 1. The track 'John 3:16' is quite simply the best track Wyclef has ever done but even dedicated Wyclef fans have seldom heard it. And that's the truth.
