Editorial Reviews

The New York Times
In Muldoon, she and the illustrator Henry Cole, longtime collaborators, have produced a delightful and expert book about a dog that ''works'' for a suburban family. An unnamed narrator describes Muldoon's ''employment'' -- supervising the children's breakfast, doing yardwork, sorting through trash to make sure nothing valuable has been thrown away by mistake and so on -- while the accompanying illustrations show what that naughty doggy is really up to. The disjuncture between deadpan text and chaotic image makes for some delicious if corny comedy. — Roderick Townley
Publishers Weekly
Floppy-eared Muldoon thinks of himself as his family's employee, and this newest offering from the creators of Some Smug Slug stretches the joke from the first line ("Muldoon works for the West family") to the last ("But the day he likes best of all is Saturday, because Saturday is... payday!"-the "pay" is a big bone). The text takes the dog's point of view, while the pictures reveal the reality of each situation as Muldoon progresses through the day. For instance, "He's in charge of getting everyone up" accompanies a picture of Muldoon in the master bedroom pulling down the covers; and a spread of the kids walking the dog to school reads "Muldoon puts the children on a leash so they don't run away." Younger children may not get all the gags about Muldoon's "career" (under a scene at the pet store, the text says, "The Wests chose Muldoon from a lot of other applicants"), but they will likely relate to the everyday events in the Wests' lives and are sure to enjoy Cole's unaffected drawings of the appealing pup and his harried family. Youngsters with canine "employees" of their own will enjoy this fun take on the pet-owning experience. Ages 4-7. (Sept.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-The West family brings Muldoon home from the pet store to "work" for them. The puppy lists his working conditions (he gets two meals a day) and enumerates his accomplishments proudly as the oversized cartoon illustrations reveal the truth: Muldoon is a lovable disaster. While the two children have breakfast, "-Muldoon supervises so that nothing gets wasted." The picture shows the pup pulling the tablecloth and food onto the kitchen floor. Gentle humor, a pleasant story, and tongue-in-cheek illustrations serve up a treat for young dog lovers. Not an essential purchase, but fun.-Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Meet the Author

Pamela Duncan Edwards (www.pameladuncanedwards.net) grew up in northern England and now lives in the Washington, D.C. area with her husband and two sons. Her father wrote children's stories for magazines in England and his love of children's literature was a huge influence on her. Pamela taught preschool for eleven years in England before becoming a children's librarian when she moved to the United States. Because of her teaching background, Pamela's books present early learning concepts and use many literary devices, but also entertain as they teach. She believes laughter is a great learning tool. For more than a decade Pamela has wowed audiences with a wealth of winning tales and continues to inspire young ones to read.

Henry Cole (www.henrycole.net) grew up on a dairy farm outside Purcellville, Virginia. Always interested in art and science, he studied forestry at Virginia Tech. He is a self-taught artist, although his mother was a professional illustrator and gave him many pointers along the way. His education required him to study nature closely, and his observation of such details helped him with his drawing. Henry worked in a number of jobs, including magazine illustration, and for sixteen years taught elementary grade science classes before he became a full-time illustrator. He now has dozens of picture books to his credit, including many he wrote and illustrated.
