Overview

The first part of this book summarizes the rationale and the preclinical data for combined treatment with ionizing radiation and pharmaceutical agents. Individual chapters focus on forms of combined treatment, with due consideration being given to a range of drugs and to emerging combinations with small molecules and antibodies. The second part comprises a series of disease-specific chapters in which the clinical results of combined modality treatment are presented.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: James G Douglas, MD, MS (Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County)
Description: Organized by disease sites, this book provides a clinical, scientific rationale for the combination treatment of radiation and chemotherapy for cancer patients.
Purpose: The objectives are to help clinicians and researchers involved in combination treatment to understand the rationale for particular drug and radiotherapy combinations as well as the interactions of drug agents with radiotherapy. This book clearly meets these goals by presenting the preclinical scientific data as well as results of clinical trials of such combination therapy.
Audience: Clinicians and researchers who treat patients with malignancies with multimodality therapy are the intended readers. The authors are recognized for their contributions in radiation oncology and medical oncology.
Features: The book focuses on the interaction of radiotherapy with chemotherapy agents both for tumor effects as well as normal tissue effects. The first of the book's two parts deals with the preclinical data for the combined use of chemoradiotherapy with excellent descriptions of the action of particular chemotherapy agents and radiation. The second part is devoted to a thorough but clear examination of the clinical trials using combined modality therapy. Excellently designed tables and figures emphasize particular points in the book.
Assessment: This is a well written, concise source for the scientific rationale for and results of combined chemoradiotherapy. It is an invaluable reference source on this subject and should be a part of all radiation oncologists' and medical oncologists' libraries.
