Overview

From pirate bugs to spittlebugs to lovely Luna moths, children will love learning about the world's insects in Multiply on the Fly! Following in the footsteps of What's New at the Zoo? and What's the Difference, this rhythmic book teaches multiplication in a way that will make children "bug" you for more. Teeming with fun facts, readers will multiply with a variety of insects, including daring dragonflies, hungry honeybees, and stealthy walking sticks. The "For Creative Minds" section in the back of the book keeps the fun rolling with facts about the insect life cycle, matching insect activities, and multiplication guides to make anyone a multiplication master.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In rhyming verse Slade describes the physical features and behaviors of insects while introducing a multiplication question: "Four lovely luna moths/ rest upon a pine./ Each one spans three inches./ How long is the luna line? 4x3=?" Readers won't find hints or answers on the spreads; for that they can turn to the extensive back matter, which includes a multiplication table and information about the insects. Hunter demonstrates care in her naturalistic illustrations of such species as dragonflies, honeybees, pirate bugs, spittlebugs, and butterflies. Ages 4–9. (Aug.)
School Library Journal
Gr 2–4—Multiplication problems from1 to 11 are all presented in short, four-line rhymes. Each problem sits on a spread vibrantly illustrated with a group of realistic insects. Sometimes the rhymes make the problems a tad confusing: "Five lonely grasshoppers/sound their mating song./Each strums two shiny wings./How many play along?" Is the question referring to grasshoppers or wings? The written equation "5 x 2 = ?" clears it up. Other featured insects include ladybugs, fireflies, solider ants, honey bees, monarchs, and pirate bugs. A "For Creative Minds" section includes facts about insect body parts and life cycles as well as several reproducible worksheets. One valuable and often misunderstood bit of information, "All bugs are insects, but not all insects are bugs," is regrettably not expanded upon. The "Multiplying Numbers" page is a helpful addition, providing kids with three different approaches for solving the examples found in the text-count the items, add each group, or multiply. It is worth noting that it is not always easy to count the items; one equation requires counting the wingspans of the luna moths, although there is no ruler on the page to show the number of inches (and if a ruler is employed to solve the equation, readers discover that the wingspans are not "three inches" anyway). In spite of its flaws, creative teachers could find a use for this title.—Heather Acerro, Rochester Public Library, MN

    cute and well-done

If you have five grasshoppers and each of them has two wings, how many wings are there total? Not only do insects themselves multiply but they can be used to help reinforce multiplication facts for children. Other insects featured in the book include fireflies, luna moths, dragonflies, ants, honeybees, ladybugs, walking sticks, monarch butterflies, and spittlebugs. Do you know what pirate bugs are and what they eat? And if each pirate bug eats eight of its prey, how many pests will be gone? As the author says, "Numbers are an important part of our world. You can find them in school, sports, and nature. When you know how to multiply numbers, you can figure out almost anything!"
The rhyming text by author Suzanne Slade, who has written over eighty books for children, emphasizes both various multiplication facts and bits of information about each insect, while the close-up sketches by Erin Hunter, who specializes in entomological and botanical illustration, will enable youngsters to know what the different insects look like. Additional material on insect body parts and life cycles, along with matching and compare/contrast activities, plus two further pages about multiplication may be located in the "For Creative Minds" section at the back. Also more free activities for parents and teachers to with use the book can be found online at the publisher's website. The age range is given as four to nine. One might use Multiply on the Fly to introduce the concept of multiplication to pre-schoolers and first graders, but I personally doubt if it will make much sense until at least second or maybe third grade. However, it is cute and well-done.

    Makes math fun!

As most readers already know, math is not exactly an easy subject to learn. In fact, math is one of the - if not THE - hardest subjects to embrace, let alone master. And that's mainly because math is not exactly a creative enterprise. But, with Sylvan Dell and their mission to help children learn any subject and learn it well, this wonderful book certainly shows the "artistic" side of math. With beautiful illustrations, a rhyming story, as well as an almost "singable" plot, this book allows children to not only learn math, but also makes them WANT to learn math. The incredible author, Suzanne Slade, is the author of over eighty books for children including everything from biographies to picture books. And the illustrator is amazing, able to take the natural world into a new multiplication dimension. From nighttime fireflies that light up the darkness with their brilliant glowing lights going on and off; to a set of ladybugs, with their black sports, leisurely sitting on a beautiful garden flower - This illustrator truly embraces the world of multiplication, and shows every child that math CAN be fun! Not only that, but the activity pages included in the book, using each and every insect to help with multiplication tables, are pure entertainment and a great way to learn. Quill Says: It is not often that a parent or child enjoys the complexities of math, but this is one book that is sure to delight everyone!
