Children's Literature - Joella Peterson
The book Mummies is part of the "That's Spooky!" series. This particular volume explains various things about mummies such as how to "Wrap Yourself Up" to "Becoming a Mummy." Each spread has one large dominate picture, which unlike a couple other books in the series has a couple of photographs of actual mummies (although there are also some pictures of people pretending to be mummies included as well). And these pictures of real mummies can be somewhat creepy. Along with one large picture there is also a short paragraph in large text. This makes the text perfect for young readers who are just starting to discover that they like reading about "Spooky" things. There are about five words throughout the text that are highlighted and defined in the back glossary (words such as "bandages" or "tombs") so that these young readers will be able to understand the new or difficult words. And the book does end with a section that reads "mummies cannot really walk around. They come to life only in spooky stories." So those who have an overactive imagination will not be as likely to scare themselves by reading about this "spooky" subject. Reviewer: Joella Peterson
