Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Donna T. Brumby
Mummies continue to hold fascination for many scholars and readers. This nonfiction Redfeather Chapter book, illustrated with drawings by the author and with photographs, has a length and reading level that will appeal to younger readers, but still retains enough information to keep it useful to student researchers. Included are descriptive examinations of mummies preserved naturally, or accidentally, as well as those intentionally created by some societies. There is some discussion of the mummification work of the ancient Egyptians, even though that is outside the scope of the title. The author is able to tell the stories of these mummy mysteries with both empathy and appeal by focusing on scientific and historical aspects, while avoiding sensationalism or morbidity. By emphasizing the mystery, or investigative, aspects of the mummy examples cited, the author builds in additional interest.
