Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Law school dropout Abby Knight is not your typical small-business owner. Still, she's enjoying the first bloom of success as an entrepreneur and trying not to worry too much about the thorny problem of what Bloomers (her little flower shop in New Chapel, Indiana) should do about the new local business that's undercutting her prices.

When a big black SUV crunches her beloved Corvette, parked right outside her shop early one morning, cop's daughter Abby is determined to make sure that the hit-and-run driver sees the error of his ways. But soon she has to wonder if her quarry's motives for avoiding her and the police go deeper than the desire to protect his insurance rates. Could the elusive miscreant be the killer who fled a nearby crime scene only moments before her classy car met its doom? Abby's soon on the scent, gathering leads and evidence to arrange into an elaborate bouquet of wrongdoing that she plans to present to the proper authorities. Meanwhile, the villain that Abby and her allies are pursuing lays some deadly groundwork to transform her intricate arrangement into an inquisitive florist's funeral wreath.

Mum's the Word is a delightful debut for Kate Collins's Flower Shop mystery series. Sue Stone

    I Also Recommend:

    Exhilarating New Series!

Abby Knight is an intelligent, engaging character that is wrapped in spark & humor. She is a welcome addition to the amateur sleuth genre.

The mystery genre is saturated w/ writers chomping @ the bit to find their place in a market that many enter but few remain.

Where standouts are few & far between. Trust me. I am a cozy mystery aficionado.

I am picky when it comes to my mysteries. Downright critical actually but Abby Knight shines!

Mum's the Word kicks off the first of the Flower Shop Mysteries & what an amusing story.

Kate Collins does a terrific job linking a lot of interesting ribbons into her delightful plot.

Mum's the Word is a smartly crafted, well written mystery. Kate does an excellent job keeping it entertaining as she steers a course of mayhem, family dynamics, fun & humor.

Abby is a feisty protagonist who speaks her mind & sticks her nose in places she shouldn't. She is extremely likable & her scenes w/ her family are hilarious.

Enter Marco Salvare... hotness. Marco is dark, enigmatic, esoteric being that adds to the series.

    Did I mention hot hot?

The chemistry between Abby & Marco was like watching a fireworks display. Enough said!

Marco! Quick let me grab an icy bottle of water.

Abby's flower shop, Bloomers, is a rare gem. Her employees are enthralling.

Collins writes w/ a warmth that enhances this adorable series.

Kudos to her for the cozy feel that covers you from the first page.

Collins characters are charismatic, witty & truly enchanting!

Once I started reading Mum's the Word it was difficult to put down.

While visiting New Chapel, Indiana, take a walk around the square & grab a bite @ Marco's bar & grill. Dee. Lish!

Head on back to Abby's for a chat w/ Grace, Lottie & Abby while sipping on tea & munching on some scrumptious baked goods. Yum! Even say hi to Jillian on her way out... or yours.

Although the mystery was somewhat obvious to figure out, there are more than enough bumps & zigzags in the road that I didn't see everything coming @ me.

Mum's the Word is an exhilarating new series that should be added to everyone's reading list.

Grab a copy of Kate Collins fabulous Mum's the Word. You won't be disappointed. Well, you may if you don't have the next in the series.

So, scoop up a copy of Slay It With Flowers while you're @ it ~ to follow Abby on her next sleuthing adventure.

    Good start to this series

After completing one year of law school, Abby Knight realizes becoming a lawyer is just not for her. Instead she decides to focus on what she is passionate about: arranging flowers. She opens up her own flower shop, Bloomers, much to her mother's chagrin. Abby's brothers are successful doctors, with country club memberships. Abby was formerly engaged to Pryce Osborne until she realized he wasn't the man she thought he was. Her mother is constantly nagging her about the choices she has made in her life and hopes she will settle down and marry soon. Next to her shop, her yellow corvette is her prized possession. As she arrives to work one morning, her vette is hit by a black SUV and the driver doesn't stop to see if she's ok. Abby quickly decides to take matters in her own hands when the police trivializes her report. Soon, she realizes that minutes prior to her car being hit, a murder took place blocks away from the accident. Abby puts two and two together and thinks the killer smashed her car while trying to get away from the scene of the crime. Despite her employee's, Grace, warnings about meddling in the police investigation, Abby finds herself in the middle and receives threats to back off the investigation. Abby enlists the help of her roommate and employees and not to mention, gorgeous Marco to solve the crime before anyone else is killed.

    Exciting mystery

After flunking out of law school and being dumped by her fiancé, Abby Knight returns to her hometown of New Chapel, Indiana. She buys Bloomers, a flower shop and is contented with her life................................... As she goes to open her store, a young fellow plows into her yellow convertible, but fails to stay around to exchange insurance information. Abby got his license plate number and learns that the Cadillac is registered to City Councilman Louis Ventucci; his nephew was probably driving the vehicle............................. At about the same time, the murdered body of Billy Ryan is found in Abby¿s apartment. She obtains the help of bar owner and private investigator Marco Salvare to help her learn the truth if the driver of the car was the killer. Abby also persuades Pearlie Harding to divorce her abusive spouse and get a restraining order to keep him away from her. She follows the husband to the bank where he hides his cash so that his wife will get none. Someone starts harassing Abby, but soon escalates the campaign into attempted murder because she has discovered something criminal that the killer wants to stop her from revealing............................ The heat that Abby and Marco generate could melt the ice caps faster than global warming as he continues to advise her to stay out of people¿s lives except for his. When she fails to heed his advice, he stays around to keep her safe while she investigates the happenings. Though the tale is all over the place, Kate Collins has written an exciting amateur sleuth starring a quirky support cast that abates the tension when it threatens to overwhelm the audience. MUM¿S THE WORD is a fine opening installment of what looks like a solid Indiana mystery series.......................... Harriet Klausner

Got one for free, enjoyed it so much that I bought another. Tonight got the next one in series. Fun light reading. Mystery and romance, but not sappy and corny.

    I'd skip it!

I love mysteries - but not this one. I can honestly say that it reminded me of the Nancy Drew series. I'd have absolutely loved this at 12-14 but now it was just a time waster. I will eventually try another and see if maybe it was just a funk I was in but, unless you enjoy the wholesome Nancy Drew mysteries, I'd skip these.

    Great Mystery!

Abby Knight is not your ordinary flower shop owner. She is your modern day Nancy Drew! Abby is one gal who does not back down no matter how much damage she gets herself into. She has awesome friends she can rely on, and an a new crush she can dream about especially when he helps her out of few predicaments. When Abby finds herself battling against men three times her size, she stands her ground, making her a role model for all women. Even when Abby comes across some deadly situations, she sticks it out! 'Mum's the Word' is a wonderful first book in a wonderful series!

The debut novel 'Mum's the Word' is an exciting first novel in the 'Flower Shop Mystery's'. The story is filled with colorful characters, adventure, along with a touch of lighthearted romance between the two main characters. It is a wonderful story that uses actual places in northern Indiana as its backdrop which adds to the fun of the story. It was a fun, fast, read!
