Van Fleet returns with another winning combination of interactive elements and buoyant rhyme as he explores an array of animal mouths: “Bunny mouth nibbles,/ Tiger mouth crunch,/ Hungry alligator mouth—/ munch, munch, munch!” he writes as friendly animals appear in a row, with readers helping the gator gobble some apples via a tab. Other nifty moments include a pelican’s mouth that opens 90 degrees to show just how many fish it can fit inside and a beaver that makes a ratcheting noise as it chomps on a log. Ages 2–6. (Aug.)
Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
A mini book mouthful! Designed and written for toddlers, this book invites touching, pressing, pulling, rubbing and of course, mouthing. The title is an interactive child's concept book illustrated on heavy cardboard with even thicker tabs so easy for toddler and preschoolers to manipulate. The book is fourteen pages with colorful animals on white glossy backgrounds, including three double-page spreads. Children can begin to interact with the book immediately: the cover tab which, when pulled, shows an alligator munching an apple from a tree branch. Readers will meet a goat, monkey, pig, hyena, bunny, tiger, stork, catfish, pelican, toad, bear, hippo, beaver, and others. Be sure to listen when pulling the busy beaver tab. Through four tabs and four textures in the book, children will find that, besides eating, mouths are used to laugh, nibble and crunch and that some mouths hiccup, whistle, sing and hum while others smile, whisper or pout. And, of course, mouths can munch. The tactile and audible features are found on only three of the fourteen pages—more would have been better. Similar books by the author include Lick! and Sniff! A delightful read-aloud and a book sturdy enough for toddler exploration. Mouthfuls of fun! Reviewer: Suzanne Javid

As with Lick! (2013) and Sniff! (2012) before, Van Fleet presents an interactive book specifically designed with toddlers in mind. This time, the subject is mouths, and despite the title, a majority of them do not appear to be eating: "Goat mouth bearded, / Tamarin mouth mustached, / Pig mouth hiccups, / Hyena mouth laughs!" Most of the pages present at least one or two tactile features. The toad's mouth is bumpy through raised embossing, and the bear's mouth sports "fuzz" through a velvety overlay. The best gimmicks here are Van Fleet's signature oversized tabs, which are easy to grab and sturdy enough for toddler manipulation. They allow readers to make an alligator mouth munch, a pelican mouth open and a beaver mouth chomp with audible clicks. The lighthearted cartoons of mischievous, grouchy and contented animals mesh well with the interactive elements. The rhyming verse doesn't scan and changes meter in the middle of the book, making for a clunky read-aloud, but since most readers will be so busy playing with tabs, they will likely not notice. While the books in this series are formulaic, fortunately it is a formula that works. (Board book. 2-5)

We bought this for our 18 month old who is obsessed with Van Fleet's "Dog" book. Munch is similar to "Dog," but not the same. It's a lot smaller in size and there are not as many sensory pieces to it. Regardless, our 18 month old loves it and our 3 year old enjoys it too. It's a regular bedtime read and he will often grab it to read during the day when we are home. It's a quick, fun, read that does not get boring thanks to the interactive nature.
